Forums - Website Topics - New Poll - why do you visit VGChartz?

ioi said:

@Taz - maybe so. Maybe I am thinking that there is something inherantly wrong with the layout or branding of the site, but maybe it is simply a case of getting ourselves out there more - making people aware that we do more than just sales charts or in a lot of cases making people aware that we exist at all...

That is my point I guess - do you guys feel that we could present all this content better than we do and that maybe more people would then associate us with news, or a great forum, or a huge game db or whatever?

Exactly. When people think of VGChartz, they think numbers. While making sure this remains a main focus, we've got to let people know aout everything else on offer.

See my other post.

Around the Network

I just suggested a new poll and got it up yesterday

I've been on this site a long time, and I've grown to love it. There are so many people loyal to this site because you provided a great service, and you acted admirably when others wouldn't. I would love to see this site become one of the greatest videogame sites on the entirety of the internet. It's a great site, and one of the few with integrity.

That said, there are a couple improvements I think we could use:

-Consistent output of data. Data does usually come out every week, but it would be nice if we had an idea of when. I still don't even know myself. I'm not saying we need an exact counter, but maybe something like "Data updates coming soon."

-Tough as nails moderation. Let's crack down on the people who detract from the community.

-Easier navigation. Even I still can't maneuver the new site, and I've been here for over 2 years. In my opinion, the simpler the better.

-Better threads. The community is still here, but the sort of spark that the community used to have isn't really there anymore. We need more in Off Topic than political and post count boosting threads. Sales discussions should be heavily checked for trolling, since it's almost always present.

People need to stop posting those incredibly annoying demotivator posters. I know a lot of people think they're funny, but if I see one more person post the Picard facepalm, I'm going to die inside. And the sad thing is that someone with a poor sense of humor is almost bound to respond to this with the exact picture I'm talking about. Additionally, some people need to stop quoting posts and adding things like "this" and "win." It's nice to be flattered, but it's also not contributing in any way. Add your own freakin' opinion. A lot of people on this site have the sense of humor similar to the type that 4chan puked out 5 years ago. Be original in your humor and put some effort in, damn.

I'll add more later, I'm busy writing a review for the site (and any of you can contribute too).

Very interesting and difficult questions indeed. So many new features have been added but are people actually looking at them?

Sales:
The main reason for coming here off course. And besides looking at the weekly data I liked using so of the other tools like comparing games/consoles and the million sellers list, but I think these have become much less visible since all the changes.

News (sales and other gaming news):
I appriciate this

Reviews:
I personally don't like reading reviews (on any site). Watching them is something different

Videos:
I never view any (ever). I'd say this is one of the weaker points of the site and they seem unnecessary to me. There's no competing with GT

Forum:
I definately use this and is very important to me

Prediction League
Great feature that gives some interactivity with the numbers. It's a pity that only about 30 people participate every week.

Running out of space on my ps3 browser now, but I'll continue

Right now, I mostly come for the community then it's for the sales.

Just a comment on the hits of the sales charts, I know I've been visiting them a lot less since 2.0 because I mainly avoid the front page nowadays.

Edit: I also get most of my gaming news from this site. I rarely go anywhere else for information about upcoming games.

Signature goes here!

I have couple of suggestions.

I feel the biggest strength of VGC is definitely the charts and sales data and analysis which are done time to time on these data, but i feel they r not given proper highlightness.

Secondly i think news section should be scrapped until or unless the VGChartz can get its own original news from its own sources.. i mean the only news i like to see is when VGChartz breaks the estimated first day sale of some blockbuster IP like MGS4. but u know searching that news some 4-6 months later is totally impossible.. i have experienced it.. simple solution could be to allow sorting the news according to the day they r posted on rather than sorting them through the last commented day. The second most important aspect of VGChartz was it community, i said was cuz i feel that forums r pushed on the sideline.. Games data is important but it is just too overwhelming and taking too much space on the main page...

Secondly i think sales charts r good, but many improvements can be made like sometime its more informative to have more data in table format rather than only first 10 weeks data in the table format.

Lastly i think there r still some issues in the website.. sometime graphs dont show up, top graphics is shown twice in IE8 and other minor issues.. although IE is not as popular as it used to be but still its one of the most important browser.. so compatibility should be improved..

btw i do like ur idea of saperate site for game news.. But i think VGChartz is not competing with n4g...

Anyway this is my point of view n everyone has the right to disagree.

We are planning to add loads of new video stuff - game previews, video reviews, game guides and allsorts.

The downside is that it comes back to my initial problem here. As we expand and add even more cool stuff it's just going to get lost unless we can present it better to visitors, I can't keep adding new boxes on the homepage for each new feature. DirtyP2002 and SamuelRSmith have the right idea of what I'm talking about - maybe make the homepage more of a portal and divide the site into distict areas or even new domains / sub-sites.

I think that Portal idea is very good.

I don't think new domains will work, simply as it reduces the "VGChartz" brand, and building the brand is the best way about getting more visitors.

By Lucifer's beard, that's it! You need a VGChartz branded flavour of Mountain Dew.

While I think this is all nice stuff, it's a bit unneeded. Gamefaqs is king on game guides, it's why they're one of the biggest sites worldwide. The other two are widely covered by big sites like Gamespot and IGN. I believe these would be useful additions, but they're not going to help the site get any bigger (content maybe, slowdown considerably). The two main draws of any video game website are content and community. Our main content consists of sales numbers, and our articles related to them (such as those from the Source), and those are the things that are the most popular. Those are the things we need to work on. The real key is making a revolution out of the content, something that would draw whole new kinds of attention. A better format would help, but this site has been stuck at the same web rank with all sorts of different formats.

And community. Well, I already ranted about that. I'd be perfectly willing to help with that if you think it will improve the site.

Only Two people like the database

And no unless we review every game I do not see this site being known for our reviews

Gamedatabase:
A very good feature. I'm feeling it's trying a bit too much recently with all the Faqs, Cheats, Extras, Critic Reviews, User Reviews as those things aren't really getting a lot of content added and/or take a lot of time to be kept up to date. It wouldn't for instance want to exchange Gamefaqs for it's excellent walkthroughs and I'm doubting it'll really get off the ground here (unless you're intention is somewhat different which it certainly is). Speaking for the Extras section all ps3 trophies are fully up to date but is anyone actually looking at them? Updating all 360 achievements will take an eternity and when only some are there you aren't getting the same service you can get from the many other sites on the web that solely focus on these.

I've tried to formulate every last word as good as I could and I don't mean any harm. So in general when you try to do too much some things will end up half-assed. (I think)(maybe)
