Living up to the hype isn't that important, actually. As long as the hype is massive and draws in new people, the overall quality of the product is irrelevant. Lair was never hugely hyped game. It never had the overall hype that games such as Mario Galaxy, Halo, and Smash brothers have. Furthermore, the games hype came mostly from a small number of people, thus limiting the overall hype the product actually had. Metal Gear Solid 4, for example, is an incredibly hype game that supposed to be a triple A tittle. However, if the game turns out to be very good tittle but not great title, it will not live up to the hype, yet it will still sell very well. New! Super Mario Bros. is a perfect example of a game not living up to it's hype. It didn't matter, though, as the game went on to sell at an incredible level. Hype is the key to selling a product.

Lair was being hyped ad naseum by Sony Fanboys for months. Now with that said it is extremely important ot follow through on Hype. If it was just hype the PS3 would be number one now and not the Wii(WW) and 360(NA). The PS3 did not deliver on its own hype and while it is a good machine was not able to suvive its price or game library. I do agree that Hype will allow a company to overcome one of those issues but not both. Essentially a product most at least prove it is worthy of the hype. The Wii did this Wii sports. The 360 did this with the XBOX and a year head start. The PS3 is not doing this and each month that goes by the less hype the PS3 can get and if it doesn't catch up and start building it again by the end of this year it won't.

I have to agree with Jman and Grandmaster, the two main reasons that the wii is selling is because of wii sports and because of hype. It helps that for just $250 you get both the machine and the game that "everyone is talking about". Honestly, two smartest moves by nintendo, pack in wii sports and sell the whole package for $250.

Currently Playing:

Xbox 360 - Rock Band, NHL 08, Skate, Halo 3, Mass Effect

Yeah I would have to agree. Most of all the pure nongamer casual crowd has been buying a Wii for Wii Sports. For more traditional gamers, however, its been Zelda or Paper Mario. Next will be Wii Fit/Mario/SSBB that will kill for the next year.

You can count me in both camps.

I anticipated the Wii just as much for Wii Sports as I did for Zelda: TP, Galaxy, & Brawl.

In some ways almost MORE for Wii Sports. I purposely held off starting Zelda so as not to take the new car smell from Wii Sports. I didn't get started with Zelda until later that December (got my system Dec. 6 last year).

So what does that make me? A Tradual? A Casuitionalist?

Lair never, ever had the massive amount of Hype that tittles such Halo or Mario Galaxy have. It was hyped by a very small group of people, unlike Mario Galaxy. You can claim Sony Fanboys hyped it all you want, but that does not equate to the massive hype that games like Halo have. As of now, the Playstaton 3 doesn't have that many hyped games. It's most hyped game is Metal Gear Solid, which will sell great no matter what type of reveiws it gets. If Metal Gear Solid only ends up with 85% average score on gamerankings, the game will still sell great, and the reviews will be called bias because of the hype the game had. This goes for Mario Galay, as well. When a title has such an incredible amount of hype, nothing can stop it. Furthermore, I would like to point out that the Playstation 3 did not launch with the same amount of Hype that the Wii did. Instead, it launched with a ton of negativity. The Wii, on the other hand, hand tons of hype before the console was even released! Nintendo made all sorts of outstanding claims, such as Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Smash Brothers all launching in the first 6 month of the Wii's launch. They also said that "When you see the Wii's graphics, you will say wow." The Wii had so much hype going for it that it was going to sell great no matte what.

Instead of trolling and just being ignorant, how about you explain your opinion with more depth.

Killzone 2 is being hyped more than MGS4.

The PS3 launched with news coverage on every channel hyping it for the entire week adding in reports of lines that were setting up to 6 days earlier. the Playstation 3 had one of the most massively hyped launches in gaming history and was only comparable to Star Wars and a few other handful of hyped events.

When waiting in line for my launch Wii that weekend I did have to go their early(the line started at Midnight) every single person that passed said (playstation 3? PS3? Ohhh the New Playstation...I thought that already came out. How many Playstations do they have in there? even the cops were coming by and telling us the Playstation had a lready launch and people had to explain what the Wii was. In the entire night only one passerby correctly said Nintendo Wii and that is beacuase she was correcting her boyfreind). the Wii had enough hype amongst internet people from E3 to sell out but the launching hype of the PS3 was immensely bigger than the Wii could have had hoped ot be. make no Mistake if Sony had launched with 6 million PS3s on Launch day in NA they would have sold that during the Holiday season. However they did not and the hype became negative with the reality of the higher price setting in and eventually lack of sales.
