Forums - Sony - Samsung: Sony set to slash prices on Bravias and Playstations

It's strange that Sony isn't doing better. It has a huge brand power thanks to Walkman and Playstation, which should affect many people into choosing Bravia LCDs over other companies' products.

I mean, if I go to the store I see the Sony TV is only like 10% more expensive than the corresponding Samsung, and Panasonics are even same price or more.

I mean, all the Playstation fans should choose the Sony TV right? Sony has so much for free from brand name. It's strange that they don't make more profit.

Very interesting, because although I may be anecdotal I find that is the case with me. I generally prefer the playstation games and have for some time now but I recently realized that it in no way affects my other purchases ie my camera, TV and phones. I wonder if this means I am casual. lol

Yes, or you're rather a leech lol.

You see, the idea by Sony is to strengthen the brand by making Playstation cool among youth, and selling it relatively cheap. But the strategy also expects that the gamer in turn should pay the reward back by choosing the Sony electronic products over other cheaper brands.

But you don't fullfill your obligations.

Perhaps that's the problem I'm no longer considered a youth and as such I buy what I want regardless of who made it.

equivalent TV's from samsung are never more expensive than Sony, and the price differential is usually much more than 10%

lol, u got it backways. I say that the Sony TV is 10% more expensive than the equivalent Samsung.

If Samsung X780 cost $1000 then the corresponging Sony Bravia Y780 will cost $1100.

No.. you read me wrong.  I agree samsungs are ALWAYS cheaper for an equivalent model.. but I think the differential is usually MORE than 10%

I suspected I misunderstood...

But u know Samsung is a premium brand nowadays, how Sony be more than 10% more expensive?

And my impression when going into stores is that Sony stuff, at least when it comes to TVs is that they're not that expensive compared to other brands (cameras is probably different, and lot more xpensive), not like Sony used to be 10 years ago.

If I was to invite some friends and their random buddies into my house, or set up a party where a bunch of girls woul be invited as well, which 40-46 inch HD TV in my living room would earn me the most respect?

Sony

Samsung

Panasonic

I remember a time when if you were after anything electronic you'd go straight for the Sony without even considering another brand. Wonder what happened :/

Lower brand power due to competent competitors and higher price points, happened.

Sony missed the train on several things...

They stuck with their Discmans / Walkmans too long, while competitors moved to MP3 players.

They started on LCD too late (so they had to cooperate with other companies to make LCD TVs).

However their competition also performed very well, which shouldn't be ignored.

Pricecut incoming... confirmed.

Now, any more leanks about a Slim?

This is the only recent leak/info/nugget that I've found with indication of a slim: http://www.amazon.de/Sony-PlayStation-3-Konsole-slim/dp/B002JM1GPU/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1249094607&sr=8-7

And as many others have said, Samsung will definitely know what Sony is up to. Sony's TV's share almost equal tech to Samsungs and many of the parts are even manufactured by them. A lot of Sony's TVs can be considered rebadged and slightly modified (upgraded screen) Samsung TV's but the hardware is practically identical.

I think we're finally getting to see the Sony of the last two gen's back in force. They're really timing press releases/leaks and games as they should be. That makes me a happy gamer!

sony is still #1

in the most pricey the dept.
