This makes me miss the days when an 8mb memory card was all one needed to play.

You have to ask yourself why a BR Disc would want to be put onto a HD in the first place? IS this because Sony know that deep down people want ease of access to games on HD's than hunt for their discs every time they want to play a game? Hmm so really Sony have already shown what a mess BR is straight away
"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)
"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)
Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.
""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""
It's not a fail, inconvenience? yea. But with a bunch of things you always run out of space and you can either delete stuff or upgrade. With a PSP you run out of space on a MS, you delete stuff or get a new stick.
At least they enabled you to have the ability to upgrade the HDD. That is a plus in itself.
You payed cheaper for the 40GB HDD PS3, you get what you payed for.
Now Sony raised the size to 80 GB on $400 models, and there is the 160 GB Uncharted model if you wish to pay more.
IMO: Sony is spot on.

It's not like Sony made installations compulsory. Uncharted 1 and 2, Killzone 2 (among others) seem to work very well without one. If a game installs 5 GB of stuff while those technical monsters don't maybe something is wrong with it.

Of course not, but they didn't forbid it either. Console makers have all kinds of requirements for developers, that could be another one.

Is this what you expect to need when you buy a console?

Any reason to hate on the PS3, eh? You really are pathetic.
Remember memory cards? This is no different.
Let me show you why they call me the velour fog. Hit it.
I met her in a club down in old Soho,
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like coca cola,
C-o-l-a, cola.
She, walked up to me and she asked me to dance,
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said;
Leela, L-e-e-l-a, Leela, Lee, Lee, Lee, Leela
Leeeeeeeelaaaaaaaa
The Velour Fog:
No, in fact there are a few things about the PS3 which I like quite a lot, such as region free gaming and Linux.
Having to do space management, wait for game installs or replace the hard drive on a 400 € console is not something I see as a positive though. I guess I'm just that biased!

well at least you don't have 360.
u would have 20gb. and make worse because u can't install part of the games, but make .iso of the 4 discs.
ps3 HDD is easy to swap. and u can get 320Gb+ 100$.

I do have a 360... the only thing I have on the HDD is a copy of Ninja Gaiden Black I downloaded from Xbox Live, all the disc games work without installation.

yet slower load times, and that was directed to the thread starter.
