Forums - Gaming - Looking for a good JRPG

All Suikoden and Grandia have "real" turn based combat.

Suikoden's turn based combat is similar to older games where the player decides what action every member will take and then let it play out.

Grandia's combat is the best IMHO as the turn based system is happening in real time i.e. the game pauses whenever it is one of your party member's turn to execute a command. It is pretty fast paced and has to be played/seen to understand how it works.

If you have a PSP or PS3 you can download suikoden 1 from PSN for $5.99. Used Suikoden 3,4,5 games should be easy to find. I believe 3 and 5 are awesome. 4 would take some getting used to. There are some gameplay differences in each version.
I believe Grandia 1 would be much harder to come by, Grandia 2 and 3 should be easy to find.

In Grandia, the lower right hand corner there is a bar that shows the turn order however it moves in real time. Whenever one of your party members' turn is up the action stops and you can take your time in deciding what action you want to take.

I believe it is a perfect blend of realtime/turn based combat.

Ok. I don't know about suikodens style or the combat but it might be good. :) I've seen Suikoden 5 for 10 euros new so I might as well try it out.

I checked that video about grandia and I did not get the battle system. I haven't seen any grandia games so I guess they aren't that common. Oh and thanks for the videos. :)

How does that differ from the system FF X uses?

Good luck, I hope you like it. I am playing Suikoden 5 right now. 30 hours into it and so far I am loving it. Chronologicaly 5 is the first (it's a prequel). Unlike FF Suikoden universe is the same in all Suikoden games and each game takes place in a different area with a few years difference. In some cases (Suikoden 1 and 2 e.g.) you can import characters form 1 to help you in 2.

Grandia is awesome but like Suikoden not many people have played it as everyone thinks of FF when they think JRPG. Being on dreamcast did not help Grandia either (it was ported to PS1 and PS2 later on). Now that Squeenix owns Grandia I am hoping for Grandia 4 on PS3 :D

And I just found Xenosaga Episode 2 for 11 euros. Damn, those games are dirt cheap.

Anyone tried Rogue Galaxy?
