Many times when the laser is failing the PS2 won't read DVDs or DVD based games but will read CD based games, like early PS2 (purple bottom) or PSX games.
Unless you've used it pretty heavily, the laser lens should just need a good cleaning. Get a container of isopropyl alcohol and some cotton swabs. Swab it GENTLY and leave it dry, then try again. Don't try anything until you have those two things on hand.
If that doesn't do anything, you will need a new laser lens.

Don't do this Soriku. Get isopropyl alcohol from a drug store/pharmacy.

i have both..PS2 phats have the tray that comes out you put the disk in and u push the tfay in...are you talking bout that???
Water won't clean your lens. Tap water has minerals and chemicals in it, I assume you don't have access to distilled water.
Should be a few dollars, yeah. 70% iso is fine.
