Forums - General - What do you tip your waiter? On average.

I am a waiter.. so tipping is kind of a personal thing to me.. I always tip at least 15% unless the service is absolutely horrible.. If the service is really good usually its over 20%.

I usually tip over 20% here because the place is overrun by British tourists who think less than 10% tips are acceptable. (Some British tip very well, but as a rule, they don't.)

In most restaurants here, you pay the tip automatically with the bill on your card.

The standard is 10% unless you specify otherwise.

I've never actually tipped. whenever people leave money on the table, i usually make an excuse to go back and take it <_< they get paychecks- they don't need tips

"Waitressing is the number one occupation for female non-college graduates in this country. It's the one job basically any woman can get, and make a living on. The reason is because of tips."

Different culters follow different rules. In the US waitresses are paid under minimum wage, and the tips are meant to boost their salery above minimum wage. If you refuse to tip and they make less than minimum wage, then the company is obligated to pay them minimum wage. So not tipping does not hurt the waitress, but may cause the food prices to go up anyways (if enough people didn't tip).

In other countries, no one tips and the waitress actually has a decent salery, so no big deal. If you go out of the US, you should check what the local customs are so you either don't look like an ass, or get robbed.

Also, it used to be the standard that 10% was ok, 15% was good service, now 10% is bad, 15% is ok, and 20% is good. Some people have even gone on to 20% average. Personally, I tip tops $10 no matter what the bill. They are waiters and have 10 tables and I only sat there for 1 hour. $10 from 10 tables over 1 hour is a lot more than I make per hour.

I don't tip a % but rather a fixed price ranging from 1$ to 5$ depending on the quality of service.

I haven't tipped anyone in UK yet, as I never payed for the restaurant yet... I wonder if its any different and if there's a certain amount that would be considered as standard.

Well, here in Brazil the usual is 10%.

Waiter get a minimum wage, but the minimum wage sucks so bad (roughly 230 dollars a month), they need these 10%.

Actually come to think of it, waiting tables wouldn't be a bad part-time job for me for the next little while.

I just hope I can find a job doing it!

Servers seem to have a big sense of entitlement. 20% percent is the only thing that makes them happy. They really should only expect 2 dollar tips. With two dollars times only four tables plus their paycheck they are making more than the average guy

Well things like mandantory 18% are a little authoritarian.  That teaches them that they deserve that percentage every time for some reason.
