Forums - General - What do you tip your waiter? On average.

People rarely tip in Finland, and I personally don't. The minimum wage for a waiter around here seems to be around 1300 € / month, so tips aren't that necessary anyway.

Tipping people is so unreliable.

The waiter or whatever is guarenteed to gain a good wage as they have to rely on money from the customer. In England you are not suppose to tip people and considering the minimun wage is roughly £6 there is no reason to either.

Zero. I live in Japan. Why should I tip someone for doing their job??

Pretty much this actually.

I am late to this thread.

For me, they get 15% when I walk in the door. If they suck, it goes down. If they are good, it goes up. For good service, I tip 20%.

Also, I always get the name of the server if they are good, and request them the next time.

Oh, and to the thread starter.... if taxes mean you can only tip 10%, eat somewhere less expensive.

15% typically, unless I'm flirting. Then it's more.

Ugh, poor waiter.

Usually 10%, depends on the service of course.

20% as long as it's decent service. One thing I've noticed is that my wife and I get a lot better service now, when we were in college we'd usually get neglected by our server for bigger tables or older people. I think most servers would just assume that since we were college kids we wouldn't tip well, then they'd give us terrible service, so we'd end up not tipping well (10%-15%). Terrible cycle really, but even in college, if we got decent service I'd tip 20%.

BTW, servers don't make minimum wage, when I worked in the service industry they made b/w $2-$3 an hour, their real money comes from tips so don't be greedy, also, some of that money goes to the hostess and bus boy.

I always tip around 10% (well whenever i can go to restaurant with some bird lol, or for a curry with my mates) only if service is bad i wont give them a penny. Waitering is a hard job (i did it for 3 weeks) that comes with quite bad money so why not help someone that does his job well

around 15% it depends on the service if its good they get a higher tip if its bad they get a lower tip

ive been told by my dad about 10 percent mostly, unless the service is shit of course
