Forums - General - What do you tip your waiter? On average.

I usually tip average 10%.

The sales tax makes me mad on my check so they would probably get more if I lived in a no sales tax state.

"Waitressing is the number one occupation for female non-college graduates in this country. It's the one job basically any woman can get, and make a living on. The reason is because of tips."

I tip 20% every time. And I usually try to be as nice as humanly possible to my waiter or waitress. Then they have no reason to put shit in my food.

15% typically, unless I'm flirting. Then it's more.

Since I mostly go out with friends, we usually tip 10 pesos (3 dollars), so I end up tiping some 2 pesos (50 cents of dollar). In average, it roughly is 5-10% of my consumption

At least in places I've worked, waitresses DO get a paycheck but their check is less than minimum wage. In addition, they are also supposed to log how much they make in tips because that needs to be taxed as well.

EDIT:

Yes, they do. In occupations where tipping is generally expected (particularly waiting tables) the minimum wage is considerably lower. In Louisiana as of right now, the minimum wage for people waiting tables is less than three dollars an hour. The reason this is legal is because tips are expected to make up the difference.

Failing to leave tips does deprive people of living expenses.

Anyway, I try to tip 15% most of the time, but sometimes err as high as 18-20%.

In Europe, tips aren't based on any percentage. You usually either give a small amount like a few €s or nothing at all, which is also OK.

Frankly I don't get tipped at my job, and don't understand why waiters should be.
