Forums - PC - Retro Review #2: Counter Strike 1.6

When it comes to multiplayer games there is always a new game claiming to be original, the best, truly great. It’s all been heard before. There are only a few games that can truly deserve that title. Counter Strike 1.6 is one of them. The legendary Half-Life mod turned full game by Valve has been critically acclaimed to be one of the best.

What makes this game so great though? That’s what many people who are new to the game or never played it ask. The game embraces a perfect mixture of well developed strategic maps, game play, and controls.

Each and every map in the game is specifically made to one game type. In a map like de_dust and de_dust2 you take the role of an anti-terrorist bomb squad. These are just one example of the many game types there are. There is also the classic deathmatch game type. Only drawback is without the mods there is only maybe 5 game types.

The controls are traditional WASD controls where, of course, the mouse is used to look around and the WASD keys that let you walk back, forth, left, and right. The hit boxes that register your hits in this old game are surprisingly well placed and shaped. The head box is a perfect oval while the chest is a large square.

Overall the game is great and is a must purchase and download off of Valve’s “Steam” client control panel.

My Ratings:
Graphics:  7/10 – There are better from its generation
Audio: 9/10 – Gun shots sound nearly perfect.
Game play: 10/10 – can’t beat a perfect FPS.
Replay Value:  8/10 – It is getting old so there should be newer better games.

Overall: 8.5/10

Counterstrike was my college crack, this and Diablo 2. Countless hours in computer labs or back in the apartments, slaying the world.

Good times.

counter-strike will be my crack forever.

another ex-CS addict here.
My prime time with this game was 1.3~1.5 (WONID/ before STEAM was introduced)

My favorite 32 people server, the regulars, the cheaters, all the popular maps, good times.

I tried CS:S not too long ago but didn't really play it much. Its too much the same as CS 1.6.

In the End I think its the 'being a regular and hanging out at the same server' thing that kept me playing CS for a long run.

Now I've moved on to TF2.

crappy old school NES games are more entertaining than next-gen games.
