Forums - PC - windows 32 BIT vs 64 BIT

Ok, I have a computer with 6 gigs of ram and an I7 2.66 ghz core. Will there bee much of a performance boost in games with the extra 3 gigs of ram I will have if I upgrade to 64 bit? I've also heard there are a LOT of problems with 64 bit systems. Any and all help appreciated as I have a disk with windows 7 rc 64bit but am still unsure wheter to use it :)

Go with 64 bit, it'll utilize your system better. No problems here so far with it.

Windows 7 64 bits, no problem. Crysis runs much better.

BTW it's called i7 not seventeen...

i7 = sevenTEENS

64bits rulez... but when I changed from 32bits to 64bits and tried crysis, wasn´t so much to see ...as improvements.... so if you are going to spend money on that, think twice!

Since you have the disk, why not try it out alongside your existing Windows install before you decide? Especially since it's an RC and will expire next year.

You won't notice any improvement from the extra RAM. 3-4GB is good enough for all gaming apps; they tend to be GPU dependent.

What's your graphics card? There's no point having an i7 and 6GB of RAM unless you have the card to use it.

I think issues with 64-bit systems tend to effect business users more, particularly developers. I know that I have all sorts of compatibility issues with drivers and such trying to connect to certain oracle versions, for instance. I've experienced a lot of issues tryign to connect to various ODBC sources with the 64 bit XP. There were enough issues, in fact, that I had to request an extra 32-bit machine just to be ready for tasks that were giving my development machine problems.

64-bit drivers were terrible compared to 32-bit when released but those issues should be fixed by now.
Game performance wont improve by much if at all.

If you want to try windows 7 there's no reason not to go for the 64 bit version though.

Any game that can consume large amounts of memory is obviously going to benefit. Also overall you may see a small benefit but nothing spectacular. For me it would be large maps in Supreme Commander that would make a difference.

I would wait for Windows 7 64 bit though especially as that will have DX11 which if you get the right card will make a difference a year down the line.

Yeah, if you're a serious gamer I would get a DX11 card in a few months. Rumours are pointing to ATI having them in September and Nvidia having them in November (though Nvidia's hasn't taped out yet so expect delays).

Go for the 64-bit version.
