Forums - Nintendo - [ ! ] Wii help/recommendations

Hey all, I plan to get a Wii sometime this summer and would really appreciate some help and recommendations to get my Wii life started =)

I rarely played the Wii so I apologize if my questions are noobish.  Aside from getting the Wii of course, Ill most likely get 4 wiimotes to party it up, are nunchucks really required for most games or can you still have fun with games like Mario Kart, Mario Party, Smash bros. without it?

Are Wiimotion+ really needed or just for mainly sports games?

I dont plan on getting any Virtual Console games so, so how big of an SD card to I rearlly need?

Do component cables really make a big difference? Ill be playing on a tube tv and/or a 1080p Sony LCD Bravia

Any cool or useful accessories? I plan on getting this Nyko station charger ...   http://www.ebgames.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=72985  ...anybody has this and knows if its good or not? Any better product than this?

I've already purchased 2 Nyko Perfect Shots for games like RE:UC and upcoming RE:DC cause they look cool and i love RE lol  ... http://www.ebgames.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=68825

Problem i find about Wii mostly is their amount of controller accessories (i dont want to have like a box full just for them), do i really need a racing wheel to play MK or holding the Wiimote is comfortable enough? (i know it comes with the game but what if i were to play 4 players?)  Any suggestions of accessories that you think might find useful?

And of course, what games do you recommend? (I already got the 3 RE games cause they were cheap and i planned on getting a Wii anyways and again i love RE lol) Im open to any game except for like real sports games.  Punch-out doesnt count as a real sports game lol.  I prefer games that are at least 2 or more players since my main reason for getting a Wii is to play with others locally.

If there's anything else I didnt cover for the Wii please let me know.  Thanks very much in advance for your input and suggestions =)

btw, will there be a Wii price cut anytime? and im sure there's no Wii HD coming right?

This are a lot of Questions ...

Nunchucks are not required for every game. I don't know about Mario Party, but Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart Wii can be played with Wiimote only.

Wiimotion+ is right now only supported by a few games. You only need them if you want to play Wii Sports Resort.

You don't need a SD-Card if you don't want to use VC-Games. The internal Memory of the Wii should be big enough for savegames.

Can't comment on component cables, however I use a RGB-cable on my SD-TV and it looks better than the standard cable.

I use normal Akkus ... can't say anything about the station charger ...

I bought the House of The Dead Overkill - Hand Cannon.

The Wii Wheel is not neccesary to play Mario Kart. I prefer to play it with Wiimote+Nunchuck.

My recommendation: Disaster: Day of Crisis

Tales of Symphomia
SMG
Mario KART Wii
Well congrats on almost getting you're wii.

You don't need an SD card and I wouldn't buy one until you actually find you need one. I have a lot (from my cameras and such) but I've never even bothered to plug them into the Wii now that they aren't being used any more.

As for controllers, again, I wouldn't buy anything until you actually need it or find you really want it. I bought 4 nunchucks and I think I normally only use 2 at any given time. Most 4 player games have various control options and I've never needed all 4 (or even wished I had them). Mario Strikers is the only game I've played that I actually used all 4, but we had like 8 controllers laying around due to multiple systems. Same with WM+. Only a few games use WM+ so buy them as you need them. I have 1 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 is the only game I own that uses it.

Yes, buy the Component cables. You can pick them up for like $5 from either monoprice.com (my favorite site for cables) or e-bay, or plenty of other websites.

As for the battery issue, I prefer rechargeable AA batteries due to the flexibility they provide (not tied to one product). It also allows me to always have a set of batteries so I never have to wait for it to charge. I bought this - http://www.batteryjunction.com/ch10chsmchwi1.html - and it works really well.

And no, don't expect a price cut unless Wii Sports Resort bombs, and even then you can't expect one til at least late fall. I highly doubt we'll see a price cut in the US within 2009.

As for games, I give you my list. If you want reasons, I'll gladly provide some, just let me know.

1) Punch-Out!!
2) Mario Kart Wii
3) Mario Strikers Charged - Arcade soccer and one of the best multiplayer games out
4) Super Mario Galaxy
5) Fire Emblem (if you like strategy games)
6) Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
7) Metroid Prime Trilogy - All 3 prime games, updated with widescreen and motion control for $50 in 1 months time.
8) Little King's Story (haven't bought it yet, but only heard good things about it and I'm going to buy it soon)

There are a lot of other really good games out there, but not sure if you'd like them. Pretty much anything in my game collection is good, but I wouldn't say that all of them are must own titles.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit

@ hentai_11 ..that gun is wicked awesome!! XD

My advice: buy Wii Sports Resort :) Great party title and fantastic use of controls - and it's awesome fun!

I second everything Nordlead said.

Depends on your preferences of course... but I would reccomend 4 Wii remotes (I only have 3 myself) 2 nunchucks and 2 of either Classic or GameCube controllers... you are pretty much set then.

Are Wiimotion+ really needed or just for mainly sports games? I am planning on getting 2 eventually, some of the multiplayer games in Wii Sports Resort need 2 of them, and if you want the best experiences in the two tennis games (GST and VT09) you would want 2... but for now I would just wait till you get a game that needs it and buy the bundle (I bought Tiger Woods 10, which is awesome... or you could buy Wii Sports Resort)

I dont plan on getting any Virtual Console games so, so how big of an SD card to I rearlly need? If you plan on buying Wiiware... then a 1GB card is EASILY enough. If you download all the channels, and have all the most memory hogging games for save files (Smash Bros is one of the largest) then your Wii internal memory could still fit 5-10 Wiiware games.... a 1GB card will give you enough space for at least 20-30 more Wiiware games, I haven't worked it out properly so it could be more.

Do component cables really make a big difference? Ill be playing on a tube tv and/or a 1080p Sony LCD Bravia Sorry, can't answer that.

Any cool or useful accessories? I plan on getting this Nyko station charger ...   http://www.ebgames.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=72985  ...anybody has this and knows if its good or not? Any better product than this? I use standard recharchables myself... I heard one of the third party chargers can break though so be careful

I've already purchased 2 Nyko Perfect Shots for games like RE:UC and upcoming RE:DC cause they look cool and i love RE lol  ... http://www.ebgames.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=68825  I wouldn't have bothered myself, but that'syour choice

You are the one buying plastic gun accessories.... With Mario Kart it works fine without the wheel... it is a good idea for people who struggle to find the right way up for any given controller (my grandparents) but generally you won't need any extra wheels... you can mix up the multiplayer how you like, so some could play with GC if they want, some with remote on it's own, some Wiimote/nunchuck.

Well RE4 of course, but I would guess that was the 3rd one in addition to the two on-rails shooters. The rest of my game collection I would reccomend to you so pick the multiplayer games from there. SSX Blur is great (assuming you don't count it as sports) but you will need a nunchuck for each player if you play multiplayer... it's still fun as 2 player hough.

If there's anything else I didnt cover for the Wii please let me know.  Thanks very much in advance for your input and suggestions =)

btw, will there be a Wii price cut anytime? God knows.  and im sure there's no Wii HD coming right? There will be no such thing, ignore what Pachter says.
