So my nostalgia train continues. I just finished this game, and next I'll be working on Resident Evil 1 (which I never actually played, but watched my brother do so because I was too scared to do it myself, since I was just like 10 years old or something). Now MGS1 is the best Metal Gear so far, bar none. There are tons of moments in this game that have cemented themselves in video game history, in the same way that FF7 did. So here we go...
5.) The Foxdie conspiracy - first, the DARPA chief dies in front of you. Then you find his body next to you in a prison cell, but has been dead for at least three days. Before that, the cyborg ninja kept acting erratically in front of you as if being near you was some sort of viral infection. Also, President Baker apparently dies as well after coming into contact with you, and on his death rattle he reveals that "they" have betrayed him. Coincidence? Then Naomi reveals this virus implanted into Snake's body, which was not told to him and he was originally sent in not to save the hostages, but actually to kill the terrorists and secure Metal Gear's test data. Then Liquid dies from it. Then Snake asks.. "How long do I have?", and Naomi says "Go on and live, Snake.."
4.) Second sniper battle with Wolf - Deep in the snow, harsh winds, the cold biting, and you're entrenched behind a tree, waiting for the woman who shot and abducted your lady.. Ten Diazepams later, she's coughing blood on the snow, talking about her childhood, and how Saladin (Big Boss) saved her from all that madness. You tell her that she's a noble animal, and she asks you to set her free with a bawling Otacon in the background.. "Why..? I loved you.." and then.. "Get me my gun.." and bam! you shoot her, and the wolves howl a lament. Classic.
3.) Snake! You've been talking to... ME! Dear Brother... - so the guy who's been offering you survival suggestions, the guy who taught you how to be Solid Snake, the guy who has been on the codec with you for the past 15 hours... is also the same guy you've been trying to kill. "Master Miller's body was found in his home.. he's been dead for at least three days.. Mei Ling said that his transmission signal was coming from inside the base.." then the guy takes off his wig and glasses, and.. holy crap. Every single time this happens, and I've gone through this fifteen or so times by now, I still get shudders.
2.) Cyborg Ninja vs. Metal Gear REX - Liquid is about to finish you off by stepping on top of you with his huge robot, then this ninja comes along, your old buddy Gray Fox, and carries the whole damn thing right from under you and saves your life.. he battles the thing, gets his arm cut off, and proceeds to get crushed by the monster's mouth.. memorable about this scene?
Grey Fox: Uuugghhh.. NOW!!! Fire the Stinger!
Snake: Fox!
Liquid: Can you really shoot? You'll kill him too!
Grey Fox: Now... in front of you... I can finally die... after Zanzibar... I was taken from the Battle...
Snake: I cant do it!
Grey Fox: ...Neither truly alive nor truly dead...an undying shadow in the world of lights... but soon... soon... it will... finally... end...
Liquid: DIE!!!
Grey Fox: Snake we're not tools of the government or anyone else! Fighting was the only thing... the only thing I was good at, but... but at least I always fought for what I beleved in... Snake... farewell.
Snake: FFFOOOOOXXXXXX!!!
1.) The battle with Psycho Mantis - perhaps few other boss fights can ever compete with this one. You start with the eeriest moment ever in a game.. "Let me read your mind.. Ah, so you like playing CASTLEVANIA (and other games).. You like to avoid fights, which makes you either smart, or a coward.." When I heard this the first time, I literally jumped out of my seat and called my brother, who thought I was going insane because I was yelling "The Playstation is reading my mind!".
Then you begin the fight with a complete inability to even touch this guy, rattling your brain as to how to actually beat him, calling up your friends who are playing the game at the same time to come up with some solution, and all of you saying "DUDE I DON'T KNOW". Then, out of nowhere, the Colonel calls you to put your controller into slot 2 so that he can't read your mind.. you go Wtf?, then call your friends again and share the secret, and they'd all be Wtf? as well.
Quite possibly the best boss fight ever made, the expression of the genius that is Hideo Kojima.
