The reason Gears 2 got a great score is because it's a really good game.

And while shooters don't appeal to Japanese audiences that much, Gears 2 has some advantages:

1. It's third person, so it doesn't cause motion sickness (at least not as much).

2. It's really gory, which I suppose would have extra appeal to Japanese fans of horror and gory movies and games.

KoF XII hasn't done well at the arcades either. It's getting a mediocre/bad score isn't surprising at all.

And there is Mai top attract a lot of the more perverted fans of the series. Seriously, some weird people are like "No Mai, No Buy". I'm just not getting it because I never enjoyed the series at all.
