Forums - Nintendo - How much longer Do You Think DS had ft before Nintendo's next Handheld?

Why destroy what still works if its still selling amazingly then they dot need a new.
The low graphic handheld sells better than any other console in todays market even last week it outsold the ps3 and the xbox 360 almost 3 to 1. And to think its been out for like 6 years and still sells more than a million every month.

I personally think 2010 is a possibility, 2011 is fairly likely, and I'm almost certain we will see it before the end of 2012 ...

As much as I think Nintendo will enjoy the bragging rights of having the best selling dedicated gaming machine ever, their primary goal is to grow their revenues through game sales by growing the market and I'm not sure they can do much more with the DS to meet these goals. While I don't want to suggest that they're in a rush to abandon the Nintendo DS, I'm fairly certain they're trying to decide the timing for their next system and its not that far into the future.

Well in 2 years they might uptate the DSi and make a upgrade. But I won't see a new handheld for a long time maybe by 2013. I think it will bereleased when a certin somone decided to have a new handeld >_>

The DS came out Holiday 2004, and it has been more successful than any other handheld (at least since the original Gameboy which was also supposed to have passed 100 million in its time).  And unlike some other highly successful video game systems, the DS has had tremendous commercial and critical success with a console that's game library has been considered to be able to compete with just about any other game system's library and it has seen the release of  quality games in almost all genres.  It has even been considered to have been responsible for bringing back once mighty genres like the adventure genre that have lain devoid of highly popular games since the end of The Golden Age of PC Adventure Games in the early 1990s.

However, eight years is starting to get a bit deep into a game console's lifetime and it might have just seen the biggest game release that it will ever see in Dragon Quest IX in Japan.

How much longer do you think it will be before Nintendo decides to replace the DS line with an even more powerful handheld like a Super DS or DS Advance?

hmmmm... that doesn't add up.

I agree with largedarryl that 360/PS3/Wii will see a successor before the DS.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

2011, depends on when Wii2 launches bcoz it will not be in the same year.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

As people have said before, it's going to be a while. It's doing really well and has sold the most of any handheld yet (I think it beat the original GB). With high software sales, expect it to stay. I think Nintendo will plan to make a new one either when software sales really decline. Until then, it's here to stay.

(but they better make a DS Smash Bros before then. Come on)

when DS sales will go under 100-120k worldwide on regular basis or when DS Lite will hit 79-89$ price tag. it will take a while before it will happen.

I will happy if they simply add an analog nub into the system so that developers actually would make 3D games for it!

It's possible with the touchscreen on the DS (just look at Super Mario 64 DS) and yet most developers are too brain dead to use that control scheme!

If you look at GBA though, it could be anytime. It was selling amazingly well and getting big name releases, then Nintendo just pulled the plug on it.
