I've never played either series,

so I was wondering what's the difference between the two?

I've played R&C 1-3 and Jak 1&2.  To be honest, not all that much in common with them.  They are, at their core, platformers (especially Jak & Daxter), but the settings, stories and gameplay implementation is very different.  Production quality is high on all of them, though, with the Jak series taking a hit when it comes to music.

What exactly are you looking for when you ask what the difference between the two is?  Fans of each will likely push their favorite, but are you trying to find out which would appeal more to you?

I was just curious because they both seemed similar and both were praised...

I heard about the weapons in R&C and so far that's making me lean toward that series. Do you get to go around making weapons?

you dont make weapons.  you can purchase/find all sorts of weapons and they all gain experience by killing enemies.   when they gain a level the weapons become more powerful and change appearance.

Looks like Mr. Bubbles clarified for you.  If you like crazy weapons that do effective, unique and sometimes hilarious things, then out of the two I'd HIGHLY recommend the R&C series.  The eventual weapons integration in the Jak series doesn't feel as organic, often with the platforming and shooter elements more at odds than complementary.

The difference is that every Jak game is superb in it's own right, each different, overhauled and innovative whilst feeling like the same series. Plus they have a deep story which isn't utter crap like Ratchet's. R n C doesn't have that same sense of reinvention - I loved R+C2, then was bitterly disappointed when R+C3 was just the same game rehashed.
