Capitalism is the best system we have come up with so far primarily because it uses one negative trait of man (greed) to overcome another negative trait of man (laziness); and the end result is that most people end up at a balance the accept between having everything they want with the least effort put forth.Unfortunately, people generally are difficult to satisfy and they always want more from less effort ...

Hence the invention of the remote control, the microwave oven, and the instant pizza-pie.

I will say that a bag of potatoes is cheaper then the equivlent fast food and quite possibly the heathiest food item in the world.

I agree with most of the rest of what you say... but the healthy foods are there and cheaper then even fast food if you know what your doing.

There are lots of inexpensive and (generally) pretty healthy food, and at one point in time I calculated that it took (roughly) $5 a day to meet the basic nutritional needs of a grown adult with enough flexibility to prevent people from becoming (too) bored with their diet ... The problem is that it takes effort and time to make food using these basic ingredients and the average person will favour more expensive foods that are quicker to cook (and often less nutritious)

Good post Vagabond. Right now the concepts of americans, and western society in general (with americans leading the way), getting fatter and stupider is somewhat scary... in a few decades it'll be interesting to see how much more seriously people take the problem.
Personally, I think any system will collapse if it stays the same for too long. Slowly but surely constantly changing the system to fit with reality is the best way to go... no type of system is infallible.

Oh yeah.  People are lazy.

I've been trying to compile a list of such health foods myself... though not being too successful.

I can cook a home meal thats cheaper to make, faster to make and healthier then fast food. Easily.

But I'm not lazy...

Do farmers markets exist in the US? Thats the best place to buy fruit and veg in Australia as they're fresher and you can talk directly to the growers and find out which ones are grown organically etc

Hopefully U.S can sustain this power.

Even if the US loses its superpower status it'll still be a formidable country, its highly unlikely that whatever country replaces the US would have the capacity or more importantly the will to invade.
