Gaming is the only thing you cannot do on a Mac or Linux so keeping it alive should be extremly important to them. And gaming pushes PCs to the limits - which means more people are upgrading pcs and that means more people buying OS licences.

They seem to be pushing the console section of their business more then the PC. They'd prefer to migrate all PC developers to 360, hence why they've made the console so similar to PC. The only reason they keep the PC business going is for DirectX and to keep gamers from buying Macs or using Linux.
