Madonna is the last of the superstars now and she's not been doing too hot the past few months it seems.

I have little faith in the replication of quality and popularity of any of the above any time soon. Music is easily at an all time low with no hope in sight for a recovery.

Yeah I'd have to go with Madonna with worldwide popularity and appeal.

I think if there is going to be another universal entertainer... I don't think it will ever come close to those legends in mass appeal.

If it does happen, it'll probably be someone thats coming from a country, newly creating their own music industry.  Not one of the established ones.

Umm... U2 has been making hits for over 30 years.

They are not even close to dead, with a #1 album this year.

I do think we'll see superstars as big again, they may not be musicians however.

No, for sure not (though, of the listed, I only like the Beatles. But they will never be surpassed). Your 70s is empty. You might wanna add the best band of that decade, Pink Floyd?

Not unless people start making good music again.

This stopped happening around 1992.

Not to demirit U2 for their musical contributions but I don't think they are as industry dominant as those listed (including Madonna).
