Oh, come now, there's nothing wrong with people liking Tolkien. Plenty of people just hold to schools of thought by which he is very enjoyable.

Picking one author and one author alone would be very difficult, as I try to read as much as I can and I tend to enjoy most of the things I read. George R. R. Martin is someone I just introduced my wife to, and she very much enjoys his books. But I also like Cormac McCarthy, Stephen King, James Clavell, Neil Gaiman.... just tons and tons.

In fact I'm going to go read a book right now. Legend by David Gemmell. It came highly recommended.

More of a nonfiction guy.  Mostly i don't read too much by the same authors because i try read a little bit about everything because i'm intereted by... just about everything.
