6 cents per hour to play WoW? Don't you have to pay the monthly fee to play or are they allowed to play it at the internet cafes?

Seems odd to me as well. $0.06/hr x 24hrs x 30 days = $43.20/month...ouch. It would be interesting to see if they're only charged when they actually play.

Gold farmers already ruined runescape ;o hope they don't end up claiming WoW too.

A drop from 11m to 5m would really hurt the company's image. It never speaks well when over 50% of people stop playing regardless of the reason.

Very true. A winner must be seen as a winner at all times. To lose 50% makes them look weak. A weakness like could give courage to competing companies on the mmo market.

6 cents an hour to play a PC game seems a lil rip off to me :) In a year you'd end up spending a $100+ the cost of the game...

well i'm assuming they are talking about playing at an internet cafe for 6 cents an hour you are playing not 6 cents per hour just to have an account.  I didn't know it was possible to play WoW without paying the monthly fee though.

Never heard of it.  Thanks for the info though.

Here's an article on Eurogamer about the same topic, but with key facts that the the OP article left out

- "NetEase is paying over USD 300 million over three years to operate WOW in China, says Edge Online. Although the WOW player-base in Asia is said to be huge - up to half the 11.5 million players the game has worldwide - it's less profitable there than in other regions, accounting for only 10 per cent of revenues, analysts reckon"

I've been over parts of Asia, and WoW is big in several of those places, so China is huge, it's hardly 6 million

- "Yahoo reports that Chinese WOW players have been flooding onto Taiwanese servers, while rival game operators have stepped up their advertising budgets to tempt idle players onto their games."

So, the accounts are still active, and people are still playing to play WoW.

- "Although it's successful in China, WOW has had a rough time there recently, with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion still unreleased in the country after getting tangled up in government red tape."

WOTLK has been out for 8-9 months, and Chinese players haven't gotten into the action...so...they are SO OUT OF THE LOOP, unless they have some other connection to WoW.  This article is complete bunk, with no facts to support his estiamte that only 5 milion players are playing WoW.

It is actually very popular.

The first campaign is "the long march" and like a couple of million participated.

Good start imo.
