BTW, the movie made 37 mil over the weekend.

Good for them then, turning a profit in the first week of release.  I'll go see it sometime this week.

Well, that is how much total the take was at the box offices.  Depending on what the distribution deals were, theatres will be taking a nice slice of this.  But it most definitely will be making quite a profit.  Especially when you look at DVD, OnDemand, and BluRay sales.  This will be quite the cash cow.

I used to work Famous Players in a theatre and was assistant manager at one point...

Theatre take is 20%

They make all their money on food.

The movie cost 30 mil, and it had somewhat quiet marketing campaign which I'd estimate around 15 million. Lets say 20 million spent for distribution and advertising.

In order for the studio to make profit here they will have to make 62.5 mil at box office. This is even before DVD, rentals, TV rights... Movie should make 2-3X the money worldwide in my opinion when its all said and done.

Thanks for the info.  I used to be an assistant manager at a dollar theatre with Georgia Theatre Company, so all bookings were done by the big wigs, leaving me with no information on such things.

This movie looks absolutely fantastic.

Seeing it today. I have a feeling MS missed out on not having this guy do Halo.

Yeah, Peter Jackson is one of the best directors I have ever seen.  Almost every movie of his is a materpiece.

District 9 looks simply amazing!

So, anyone see it yet? I couldn't make it this weekend, but I'll go soon.

btw, anyone curios wikipedia has a cool writeup about it and its real background in South African Apartheid.

GREAT movie...for a $30 million budget...they delviered sFX better than Wolverine. I'm just shocked that Weta doesn't get more business, given that they were able to deliver a film like this for that amount of money. Of course, using a South African cast helped to keep cost low as well...

yep. they spent next to nothing on cast and everything on visuals.

Can't wait to watch it.
