Before the Wii, the SNES was the only console to overcome a headstart of its competition, but that has more to do with the contracts Nintendo had with mainly japanese 3rd parties to secure their support than the superior hardware compared to the Genesis/Megadrive. The SNES simply had more great games than Sega's console, which made the difference at the end.

Euhm Genesis had great games the only thing that makes the Snes win is because Genesis sold very bad at the Japanese market.
Genesis was more popular than the Snes in the pal regions Snes 8 million Genesis 9 million
In NA Snes 23 million Genesis 17 million
I you only have this numbers it was just a slighty defeat but if you include the Japanese market you see why Snes won with a big difference. Sega had also a lot of main 3d party developpers but just games like Sonic (who are from a Japanese developper) didn't sell in Japan.
