This is about as much as I figured a guy who's never played Halo before and doesn't do online games would like it. The single player mode of Halo is cool, and somewhat epic if you've been following it from day one, but honestly just barely 90+ material. The game really starts to shine when you play the campaign in co-op mode, however, and lots of people think the online mode is the best in any console game yet.
You might say he's missing the entire point of the game by playing it as he does, but I think it's good that we have some reviews from a perspective like this. There are still millions of people who own a 360, but no Live subscription, and I'm willing to bet not all of them have lots of friends. =P
Good as always. I always look forward to his reviews.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release. (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
He's right in the sense that without co-op and multiplayer, the Halo 3 single player campaign is not all that impressive.
We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai
It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

I'll assume he's spot on since he usually is and I'm also not a huge fan of multiplayer (though that's strangely why I picked it up) and don't care about co-op. I picked this up last Saturday and I still haven't touched it. >_>
Haha very entertaining. I always enjoy his reviews. Before every Halo 3 fanboy comes in and lays down on him: He's never played a Halo before and was reviewing just the singleplayer from that standpoint. I can't imagine many people buying Halo 3 for it's singleplayer only, because it's singleplayer doesn't offer anything particularly special for $60. So, from the perspective of a single-player only gamer, I would agree with him. However, the mulitplayer is ridiculously fun.
Oh and I completely agree with him that you shouldn't need excuses for a game that gets 10s. If you need to have excuses lined up for it's problems it obviously wasn't a 10 in the first place.

If you're not a fan of multiplayer or co-op, why would you buy Halo 3?
Did Escapist Magazine pay for your copy also?

"also"
I know they paid for Ben Croshaw's review copy, my (rhetorical) question was directed at twesterm.

I dunno, I rented Super Paper Mario and I have yet to touch it...there's just too many other games to play right now.
