Sony: Gamers will upgrade to “more powerful” PS3 later

Sony Europe boss Andrew House believes gamers will upgrade to the “more powerful” PS3 later in the consoles life cycle when the price goes down.

Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine, House claims that Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii owners may eventually upgrade to the PS3 in future as Sony claim N64 owners have in the past, upgrading to a PS2.

“If you look back at previous lifecycles, like PS2 versus N64 [sic], we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the life cycle when the price point was right for them.”

“I think we’re going to see this later on PS3, and the fact that it’s a Blu-ray player as well and that there’s a [greater] wealth of network based experiences than are perhaps available on the device they already have will add to the proposition.

But there’s the thing right there. The issue of price. Does the Sony boss think the console costs too much in Europe? House, while admitting (naturally) that companies have to price for profit also said that Euro consumers will have understood the value of the console.

“I think you have to position price points around business facing issues like profitability, but I put that in the context of a long life cycle. The great thing for me is that European consumers have understood the total value proposition that you get with PS3, not focused solely on pricing.

As for lowering the price House insisted that the company is looking at the cost of the console, while taking numerous other factors into account, though probably not how many forum users and commenters are calling for one.

“We will have to constantly monitor that and make adjustments when all the factors come into play and make the right decisions at the right time.”

According to an analyst earlier we won’t have to wait long for a PS3 price cut, claiming Sony will reduce the cost of the PS3 this August.

If gamers upgrade to the most powerful system? they(gamers) didn't upgrade to the xbox from the ps2

I think people should upgrade to more powerful systems too.

Wii/360/PS3 owners alike need to hurry up and upgrade to a PC.

Let's get a gaming PC then.

So basically Sony think that the Xbox 360 and the Wii are last generation?
I for a fact won't be upgrading to the Playstation 3 when the Xbox 360 is finally discontinued in perhaps 2012-2014. I will be upgrading to a true "Next Generation" console, notably the Xbox 720 which I can guarentee you know will be much more powerful. Think of the performance leap consoles take every generation..

I'm estimating something like a 6GHZ 6-8 core processor, 4GB Ram, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295x2
1TB hardrive and a new multimedia format. Duel Layered DvDs would be out of the question unless all games were unpacked to the hardrive.

The only thing powerful about the Playstation 3 is the Processor. It is let down by everything else which stops it from being as good as the Pcs of today, let alone PCs 5 years from now. Hell the Xbox 360 has a better GPU and more dedicated Ram.

the only powerful thing in PS3 i see is that it can play blu ray. That is it.

ps2 vs N64 + Sony Spin = LOL
Really..PS2 Vs N64...Really?

Yes, all families with an SUV or some family vehicle always ditch it for a 2 seater sports car. Oh and my friend that does lot's of hauling of stuff will assuredly dump his pickup for a Doleran(snicker) in the near future.

WTH? does the Sony guy think he is saying? People don't buy products on power or feature rich. They buy it on feature value. Video game machines are no different. He's making an assumption that his sports car is something everyone wants and it's only price that get's in the way. That's pretty much the view of a failing company. Instead he should be thinking "does are product meat the value desires of the customers and if not how can we?" but never once has Sony ever thought about it like that. They have just assumed it's Sony PS it's wanted.

Also if someone doesn't need a top of the line pickup is he going to buy a top of the line pick up 30k when a 18k will work just as well? short answer

No.

Long answer

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

This was posted before. I will never forget that stupid PS2 vs N64 quote.
