In Japan, Dragon Quest, Pokemon (or anything 'Monster' based), Mario, Anime based games. It remains to be seen if Final Fantasy XIII will sell well in Japan. So far, the series popularity remains high, but the sales have fluctuated up and down between the countless remakes and sequels, just like oversees. And Japan still shows a great hesitation to try the PS3.

In the west, games like Halo, GTA, Madden (and sports games in general), Mario, Pokemon, Zelda. Also, this gen has seen the introduction of the 'Wii' titles, but that's only for a specific group of gamers (though obviously they are buying millions of titles). Games like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear and such no longer drive console sales, though they still sell well on the consoles they are on. This is partially due to them no longer being exclusive and also due to their limited appeal (yes, even Final Fantasy with its 40+ games this gen has a limited appeal).
