Forums - Gaming - Analysis: X360 underachieving and why it won't get a price-cut in 2009

The said:
@nightsurge what price cut are you talking about? in Sept 2008 the Xbox SKUs got cut from $280, $350 and $450 to $200, $300, and $400... the PS3 price was the same as it is since OCT 2007, $400/$500.

Repeating myself is so last week.

Let me type this slowly so you can understand.

At the time the PS3 cut it's price, it was the same price as the 360.  It remained that way until about summer time when the 360 did a price cut to clear out old inventory before the new hardware/price point.  The 360 did not really cut the price until September when it finally became $100 cheaper than the PS3 again for the most dominant selling SKU's.  The arcade became $200 cheaper and for the 2 holiday months was the top selling SKU.

So PS3 cuts price to $400:  360 SKU's were $300 "core" $400 Pro $500 Elite

@lord The PS3 will end up selling more than it did last year, or just as much WHILE KEEPING THE SAME EXACT PRICE OF $400/$500 FOR ALMOST THE WHOLE YEAR. The 360 is suppoused to be doing much better because this whole year it's been signifcantly cheaper than it was the first three quarters of 2008.

Let's say Sony REALLY screws up and don't drop the price this year (big mistake) they would still sell just as much as in 2008. Why? Answer: Japan is getting the Final Fantasy XIII (exclusive to PS3 in Japan) this year.

@night... the PS3 and 360 have never been the same price.

Except it doesn't look that way for the PS3 RIGHT NOW.
I have no doubt the PS3 will sell more than last year but the 360 is ALREADY 0.5MIL UP ON LAST YEAR.
So all the 360 has to do is basically sell slightly above par for last year and it's done it.
With all the software coming out for this christmas including a new Halo game that is the least it will do.

Seriously you are blind if you are so willing to dismiss the fact it is already halfway to your magic goal and if you mean the fiscal year then you're also possibly dismissing Natal.

^It's calendar year. Wanna bet the 360 won't reach 12 million in calendar year 2009?

oh noes

wow i just read everything in this post and lemme tell you xbox fanboys are going crazy lol.

The price cut helped a lot lol thats a fact. But a Sony price cut or a wii to $200 will do more...i think thats what the OP is trying to say and i agree.

Is M$ price cut a failure? Absolutely not... but is it the end all be all? also absolutely not.

Look at these interesting numbers for the first Xbox....

Even the born-doomed first Xbox managed to be well up YOY in its 3rd year

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 05th Jan 2003 to 03rd Jan 2004:

Console

XB

Total

5,660,219

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 04th Jan 2004 to 01st Jan 2005:

Console

XB

Total

6,829,375

It was certainly selling at mass-market price during 2003 and 2004. How did it manage to outsell 2003 by 1.2 million total units? price-cut of course. There's nothing special about selling more because of a price-cut, that's just expected. In the case of a strong contender and strong 30 million seller like the 360 in its 4th year (with a mass-market price since the beginning), doing less than 1 million YOY after a price-cut is laughable.

"The" against the xbox hordes.

Do you seriously not know how to read?  I am not spouting lies here, I'm telling you facts and your only rebuttal is a denial with no evidence?

And since when is $400 a mass market price?

I don't want to insult you and go against the forum rules, but is it still an insult if it is true?  Please stop being so ignorant.

That means for almost an entire year they were the same price of $400/500.
