You used to play ISS too? those games were also great xD

Yes man, its where it all started. It was ISS* at first and at some point it became ISSproEvolution from which the PES name came

*For those who dont know ISS stands  for International Superstar Soccer

I think that the real problem with Konami is that they don't want to take any chances and mess up the formula that they have been building up for the last decade. It's getting stagnant fast, albeit it's stilll good in my opinion, and I also think that they should do a bit more, engine wise, gameplay wise and content wise. It's not good for a footbal game not to have all the major leagues in it, and that has been my major gripe with PES for a few years back.

@Cthulhu

I used to play ISS on the SNES back in the days when FIFA 95 was all the rage on the megadrive, and when the series moved to the Playstation and gave us that fantastic ISS pro evolution, I was really enchanted with the game.
At that time I used to own both games, the last FIFA that i bought was FIFA 2002, and since then I only play it when i go to a friend's house who still loves FIFA.

The link is broken. I really want to see these scans.

FIFA games have always sucked compared to PES but PES has not been able to find its groove this ge n. I hope that changes soon.

The same goes for the PES fans that don't seem to find FIFA any better than PES. Different play styles and different expectations of a football game. I can't get into FIFA because of the more arcady feel, the only mode that I really liked in the last two FIFA's was Be a Pro, because it was really well done, and made you feel like you were actually a player. In that aspect, the similar mode in PES 09 felt a bit akward and didn't quite fit with the whole feel of the game.

On the contrary, I found Become a Legend much better done than Be A Pro. When I tried Be A Pro, in 3 matches I was already the key player, captain and leading goalscorer of Arsenal, with only 17 years old and being a left attacking midfielder. The fact that you can force the comp to give it to you kinda makes the game pointless, since that's not like a real football match. In PES' Become a Legend, I had to work my way a lot till I became a good player, and it made me feel really accomplished when I was signed for Inter.

Of course the mode has some problems, like the matches you don't play being too slow, your coach being to awkward (removing you in the least appropiate moment) and that when you're signed for a team you never start as starter (no matter how good player you are) and you always have to miss the first matches. But overall, it felt more like you were playing a footballer's career than in FIFA, where it just felt like you were playing the same normal mode but controlling only one player

PES really needs a good game this year to re insert itself back to being the number 1 football franchise.

To be honest nowadays PES feels much more arcade than FIFA.  I always played PES, since ISS on the supernintendo, but really PES starts on the PS1 with ISS Pro, as SNES ISS series was continued by Major A on N64.

ISS Pro for the PS1 was fantastic, heads and shoulders ahead of anything at the time, FIFA did always pretty much suck, with notable exceptions as the 98 Road to the World Cup game that was actually pretty good.  Sadly, PES got stuck.  FIFA continued to be crap until 08, which showed EA was (very surprisingly) getting it right, not quite for 08 in my opinion though.

FIFA 09 is just better than PES9.  As a PES player, I have to say when you first try FIFA09 it feels awkward, which is a normal thing I guess after a lifetime of PES.  If you keep digging, you will find a very solid football game.  The player physics, the way the collisions among players happen, it's just incredibly better than PES.  If you take on the manual control, then the simulation you achieve is nowhere near what PES can achieve.  You decide the force and direction of any pass, such is the control that the pass through button becomes useless as you just pass through with the normal pass.  In PES on the other hand you just press X and the ball keeps going to the players, doesn't really matter much the direction you apply of the force, things happen too easy, there is little reward.   In FIFA09 it's an achievement just to make the ball flow with no mistakes through your defenders.  This has an impact on the way you play, it's easy to miss a pass, it tempts you to just clear the ball with a long kick when you are pressed on defense.  I could go on and on.  In my opinion, PES is much more arcade than FIFA.  To all PES players, just give FIFA time, put some time on it and when you go back to PES you will be amazed of the things you can't do.   I am leaving aside presentation, sound, comentary, licences...

@Jaaau!

That manual pass function has been on PES since PES 4, It's done with the Right Analog Stick, and you decide the force, placement and swerve of the ball with it. FIFA just copied the same funcionality, as it works exactly the same way. Actually, you can only trully master PES if you master the manual pass, because coupling it with the 1-2 pass, it's the only true way you'll ever make it through professional tournaments were the competition is really fierce.

I've played a lot of matches in FIFA 09, some couple of seasons as well, and I just don't get the same simulation feeling that I have with PES, since the matches flow so slowly, and the players are not very well balanced, since they have akward resistance to tackling. Also zone defence in FIFA isn't very well done, because the AI will pressure you with one or two defenders when you are only near their area, in most parts of the field there are a lot of inconsistancies (I've done dribblings with Puyol through the entire middle field of Chelsea and no one came to try to take off the ball.)

In PES you've got more fluid matches and the whole feeling of the matches seems more lifelike.

@Zexen_Lowe

Actually, my major gripe with Be a Legend is the fact that it is very inconsistant with the substitutions, and the fact that it really doesn't matter if you are a good player or not, because you're always treated like a newcomer in each team that you go.

I know that, I mentioned it in my complaints. I hope Konami can fix it for PES2010, because they have a winner there, I've played more Become A Legend matches than regular ones

I only did four seasons with my Become a Legend player, at that time it became boring since I had pratically won almost every trophy in the mode (I only lack League B,C,D top assist trophy). I've lost count on how many seasons on how many teams i've done in ML, to me it will always be the heart of PES. But also ML is getting a bit stagnant, hopefully they'll add more divisions to give it a more challenging feeling, since you can win almost everthing in 4 seasons as well.
