How on earth can there be so much JRPG fans on VGC??

Look at the poll results! Final Fantasy has almost 50% and there's still several more JRPGs that also got enough votes to beat the measly 6 western-RPG (of 30 franchises!) that are included in the poll. Less than 20% of the total votes cast were put on a WRPG!

  28% (35) Shin Megami Tensei
  8% (10) Suikoden
  8% (10) Chrono
  5% (7) Xenosaga/Xenogears
  43% (53) Final Fantasy
  12% (15) Fire Emblem
  4% (6) Mana
  1% (2) Ys
  4% (5) Lunar
  7% (9) Phantasy Star
  1% (2) Shining Force
  0% (1) Wild Arms
  5% (7) Grandia
  4% (5) Star Ocean
  7% (9) Fallout
  3% (4) Shadow Hearts
  3% (4) Dark Cloud
  8% (10) Mother/Earthbound
  4% (6) Baldur's Gate
  4% (6) Disgaea
  2% (3) Monster Hunter
  19% (24) Pokemon
  8% (11) Elder Scrolls
  8% (11) Mass Effect
  8% (11) Tales of ..
  6% (8) Dragon Quest
  8% (10) Fable
  13% (17) Kingdom hearts
8% (11) Knights of the Old Republic
  3% (4) Breath of Fire

(^correct me if there's a WRPG franchise I missed to put in green)

In 'the real world' WRPG is a bigger genre than JRPG, even if we're just looking at console numbers (with PC included JRPG would be totally crushed by WRPG in number of gamers and sales), but here on VGC it must be like it's 4:1 in favor of RPG-lovers who prefer JRPG over WRPG.

Amazing. But how can it be so?

This question is almost thread worthy.

Around the Network

I think it is because most people have played JRPG first and have fond memories of them.

Case in point would be my own introduction to RPGs. My first RPG was "the summoning" by event horizon on the PC and to this day I think it is one of the best games I ever played. However, it was not a huge success.
