Forums - Microsoft - My Mass Effect Review

I dont know man...

It all comes down to personal taste.

I didn't like mass effect. Too slow...you have to chat with all those people, and rarely do major plot points get revealed...but you feel bad if you don't talk to them thinking you missed something.

And when action does happen, its very generic for an action gamer. I'm sure the RPG elements make up for the lack of shooter elements...but I'm not the type of guy that will want to mix his cherry coke with sprite. Game trying to wear different hats at the same time doesn't usually work for me...

Otherwise while we are talking about slow and underwhelming games, I found MGS4 to be just as bad, especially considering how amazing part 3 was. Slow story development, lack of focus on any gameplay elements, terrible script and dialoge and recycled and uninteresting boss fights. The tone of the game is the most dissapointing part...where is the humour? why are bosses not interesting characters with their own agenda but are mind controlled hot chicks? Where is the plot twist? The whole game just felt like it was dragging its feet...

Both of these games are considered to be cream of the crop this generation...and I wouldnt have kind words for either.
Hence why I never make threads called..."Gears of War 2...My own review". Cause not many people want to hear what I have to say about these games.

Same goes for this thread...

I would be excited for ME2 but I can't seem to get that far in ME1. I tried it 3 times so far. First time with the 360 version, hated the combat. Second time for the PC version, liked it a lot more from what I played but my computer broke down and had to get a new one. Third time, played for like 10 minutes on new computer just recently but it doesn't run well at all with serious frame rate problems that make the game downright unplayable. I tried to change the settings but it didn't work. I was hoping to like BioWare since ME1 is the only game they made that I actually played. I am hoping to play Dragon Age though.

Actually I respect anyones opinion. :)

On your mixing Cherry coke with Sprite. That all depends on what you thin an RPG actually is. Or more to the point what is the definition of RPG. To be honest S.T.A.G.E was right about the fact that Final Fantasy is so far from what the original meaning for RPG is, that because it's refered to as an RPG people use that as their point of origin. When actually Bioware and Bethesda games are the closest games to the actual RPG definition.

So Mass Effect with it's shooting system, custom character, choices and leveling system are all spot on. The only element of FF for example that is RPG is the level system. EVERYTHING else is not RPG, but general adventure.

That is interesting...never knew that. So I've been avoiding RPG games like the plauge due to my general displeasure with FF series...for nothing? :)

Mass Effect is the type of game I have a feeling id enjoy if I could get some alone time or more free time to play. I played it only for a couple of hours cause every time I go on to play it...id get a halo 3 incite here, street fighter invite there...couldn't even get down to playing it more than 15 mins at a time.

I love Mass Effect. It's my number 1 game of all time. But because of this take what I think about the game with a pinch of salt if you want. But Mass Effect plays 100% different form Final Fantasy. Western RPG's are actual RPG's. The reason why JRPG's are called JRPG's is becasue they aren't anyhting like an actual RPG. Essentually JRPG's are in many ways a point and click adventure with less puzzles and a level up system. RPG's originated on paper based games. They moved over to video games. And the Japanese borrowed the leveling system thats all. If your unsure, like you say try and spend some time with Mass Effect. It will be nothing like your FF experience I can assure you.

Oh god, please don't get into a "JRPG vs. WRPG" discussion. Everyone here has clear set biases, it's not going to go anywhere. Let's just talk about Mass Effect.

This is your opinion Maginific0... Mine is different.

Mass Effect is my best game of all time.

I'm 28 years old, I'm playing videogames since 8.
No other game feels more mature, aimed for adults with a strong atmosphere and universe (deeper than Star Wars and Star Trek movies).

This is the perfect RPG.
This is the perfect interactive experience.

Wow...didn't expect to find a Mass Effect worshiper here. I guess there's always a group of people who worship something, no matter how crappy others think of it. It's just like disolitude said. Opinions are different indeed. Just like there's people who worship stuff like the Backstreet Boys and Brittney, Star Trek, The Dark Knight, etc....I see where you're coming from Neoraf, and I can't say "you're wrong and I'm right" but nobody can call something perfect when that thing is plagued with glitches and stuttering frame rate from start to finish, maybe you played the PC version and that one didn't suffer from that. Even so, it's just opinion, I've known people call MGS2 the best in the series, go figure...even shit has worshipers, and Mass Effect is definitely not shit and its entitled to its share of worshipers too.

Sorry buddy. Just pointed it out to the coke and sprite thing. I didnt use any opinion though. I used actual origin of RPG's. Paper based RPG's are the origin. So that is an RPG. Something which Jrpg's dont have hardly anyhting from. That was my point. Wheras Wrpg's actual are derived from paper based RPG's. That was my point.

You'll find that there's a lot of Mass Effect fans on this site. And there's always people who dislike something, no matter how universally acclaimed it is. I guess at the end of the day, there's always someone who thinks their opinion speaks for most people, even though it's way out in left field.

That's fine. I was just worried that we'd get fans of JRPGs in here, and they'd start arguing even though they've never played Mass Effect. I think both types of RPGs are great, frankly.
