@seece

as UK is a small market

overtracking/undertracking byt more than say 20K is worthy of an adjustment imo

UK is a small market?.........How did nobody else pick up this?

The UK performs better then Japan in the console market now days, does that make Japan a small market? In fact UK is now the 2nd biggest console market in the world.

Compare just 2009 sales

Wii = 822k in UK and 484k in Japan  = UK sold 338k more or 69% more then Japan.

PS3 = 282k in UK and 503k in Japan = UK sold 221k less or 43% less then Japan.

360 = 416k in UK and 198k in Japan = UK sold 218k more or 47% more then Japan.

PS2 = 101k in UK and 128k in Japan = UK sold 27k less or  21% lss then Japan.

Total for console sales 2009 = 1.621m Console sales in UK and 1.313m console sales in Japan. Meaning UK has sold 308k or 20% more consoles then Japan.

Considering Japan has a 127m population and UK has a 61m population that puts it in even bigger context.

So it would be interesting to know how you define small market exactly as im guess you are comparing to a country with a population of over 300m people?

I had never done the numbers on that, it paints a bleak picture for home consoles in japan...... does this chart hold up with handhelds?

and do you think after economic recovery this will change? japan has been hit harder then most other areas due to dependency on trade strong currency, and a national habit of decreasing spending in anticipation of hard times far more then any other major economy which slows down recovery of domestic market

The UK was also hit very harshly by the recession, thanks to our huge dependence on the financial sector (largest in the world, if that means muchm at the moment).

Around the Network

I think this is the key phrase: (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/technology/2009/07/03/xbox-360-has-outsold-wii-ds-and-ps3-in-uk-2009-115875-21492199/)

Analysis of the difference between Chart-Track figures released in late January and those released now, at the end of June, collated by Gamezine.co.uk, show that the Microsoft Xbox 360 had sold 600,000 units in that time period. The Nintendo Wii sold 300,000 and the Nintendo DS and DSi together sold 400,000. The Sony PS3 sold 300,000 and the Sony PSP sold 100,000.

Basically, the analysis as reported is looking at the difference. It is possible that Chart-Track issued a correction in between because it had undertracked the Xbox 360 over time -- but those numbers are being picked up as a massive Xbox 360 sales surge.

Meanwhile, reports based on software tell a different story (http://www.gamezine.co.uk/news/game-industry/uk-s-video-games-industry-becomes-family-orientated-$1309381.htm):

The UK's video game industry has officially hit the mainstream with family entertainment games taking the top three spots in the first half of 2009.

The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA), the UK games publishers' trade body, today released UK video game sales results (compiled by Gfk Charttrack) for the first half of 2009.

The results show that the Nintendo Wii's family-orientated games struck a chord with the UK public, with Wii Fit, Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii amassing 1.65 million unit sales. Nintendo’s Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training also surpassed three-million units, becoming the UK's most popular game released to date.

"These figures are clear evidence that gaming is now mainstream in the UK," said Michael Rawlinson, director general of ELSPA.

"The demographic has changed, so it’s time we did away with the mis-perception that video games are merely the preserve of teenage boys shooting zombies. Innovation in the industry means the social and educational benefits of gaming are now enjoyed by players of both sexes and of all ages."

Similarly, the top 10 sales list -- as released by GfKTrack (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24325):

- 1. Wii Fit (Wii)
- 2. Wii Play (Wii)
- 3. Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
- 4. Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS)
- 5. Killzone 2 (PS3)
- 6. Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360)
- 7. Dr Kawashima's Brain Training (DS)
- 8. The Sims 3 (PC)
- 9. Call of Duty: World At War (Xbox 360)
- 10. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)

Finally, if the Xbox 360 was doing this well, why has not Microsoft issued a press release/missive?

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.
