Forums - Sony - PSP to become a phone!?? Apparently so...

It already is a phone is what I meant.. it has skype doesnt it?

I'm not sure, think it does. However, you can't seriously compare a full blown attempt at a competing smartphone to software that pretends to be a phone on a handheld game console.

Skype is really all software, the psphone thing would be all hardware. Besides other devices have skype as well (ipod touch) and do it better. It doesn't garner the psp any new potential buyers but this smartphone thing could really help sony out of a hole if done extremely well. It could also flop horribly and seriously break sony. I commend sony for having the spunk to risk this. They're looking to fight back and big.

The smartphone market has become quite the battlefield though.

Yea but atleast theres alot of buzz over at verizon. Something is better than nothing and verizon appears to be getting alot of something as of late. The storm isn't perfect but also better than nothing. It's better than the G1 android. Possibly the 4th-6th best smartphone out there.

I'd be happy if you could enlighten me.

Nonetheless, skype on the psp can never compete with an actual smartphone, especially the amazing new phones being churned out noadays. Wireless service providers are also moving on to 4G networks.

Lastly, Wi-fi severely hinders any appeal skype might have.

Haha
PSP=Play Station Phone

^click the license to level it up! Please, and thanks in advance!

Besides leoj, you should be happy about this. It'll be quite interesting to see what Sony can come up with. Especially given the fact that NVidia's Tegra chip is ready to be used in anything with the word mobile in it.

The possibilities are plenty.

With MS coming out with their ZuneHD and a smartphone of their own, coupled with Apples domination, competition is ferocious.

Any company even considering to get into the smartphone buisness is planning on putting in their best of efforts, no less. Better for us man.....

CHEER!!!

Im not comparing skype to a smart phone if thats what you are going at, Im just saying the PSP has that capability, and yes its extreemly limited due to Wifi.

I dunno. My plan with Verizon expires next year. I'm eligible for an upgrade on the 31st of December...if they have anything I want between then and when my plan expires in may, I might stay. Even if it's just a fixed version of the Blackberry Storm.

Are you aware of the MIFI device, it's freaking awesome! Sprint has it also but their service isn't very good and is also slower. Verizon I think will always be top knotch. You've picked a good company. If you ever do decide to leave come over to AT&T. Honestly, anything besides those two is subpar.

I'm waiting on the whole AT&T, Verizon and Apple love triangle to play out. If the Iphone goes to multiple wireless providers or becomes verizon exclusive I'll probably switch. Then again, if MS's smartphone is good and verizon gets it, I might switch comapany and device. My advice, do exactly what you're doing, just sit tight. The products and deals are all underway as we speak.

I think n ext gen consoles there will be a new XBOX and a new Nintendo console, but Sony will keep PS3. Instead they will release a PSP2/Phone, capable of doing so much more then the iPhone, DSi, PSPgo ect.

If the rumors about iphone and palm pre are true (supposedly verizon is trying to get both of them) then I might not switch. That's why another reason why I'm kind of holding out.

Really??? Wow, didn't know about that rumor. It's unlikely though, verizon is huge but it's pockets are not at&t deep. Verizon would also have to cut a very sweet deal for both Apple and Palm since companies would prefer to be the best device on a wireless provider by a substantial margin. Otherwise their sales wouldn't be optimized. The pre and 3gs on the same service!?!? That'll be hard as they are head and shoulders above everything else and cutting their potential customers between each other on one service, I just don't see why either company would agree. It would be very awesome for verizon but very bad for aple and palm, very one sided deal.

Then again the MS smarthphone on the way and the psphone as well? Something has got to give. I think that only 2-4 phones will remain exclusive and everything else will be on multiple wireless service providers.
