Forums - Sony - The Reality behind a PS3 Slim

So, I predict the following happening in this order:-

1: Firmware 3.0 announced/released with PS2 backwards compatibility which may/may not PS3 slim specific along with some rare classic PS2 download service.

Do you think games like Ico, Shadow of colossis and Okami would become available as download?

Btw, does the PSN have any PS2 games for download already, like you see some old Xbox games for download on Xbox Live?

I don't know how there would be a PS3 slim due to the space needed for all that hardware and other stuff. If there was a slim, the would have to take out a lot from the console.

, and lets not forget Natal will be coming in early 2010 to really mix things up.  I think the majority of the industry is more excited about Natal than a PS3 pricecut or slim of any kind.

---------------------------------------

Natal isn't going to do a damn thing.

No controller add-on released mid-generation has ever played a significant role in a console war, much less a decisive one.

As far as the majority of the industry, they probably don't even know or even care about Natal considering that it's got no concrete release date, no pricing information, and no completed games.

Consoles owned: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3

I have doubts that the PS3 @ $299 will even exceed the sales of the PS3 @ $400 in early 2008. Slim model or not theres a very real saturation effect going on in the market as more people pick up consoles there are fewer people for Sony to sell to which I think is pretty obvious, hopefully anyway. The long terms effects of the original price cut measuring 6 months before and 6 months after have an elasticity of -1.08 and since price elasticity of demand drops as you cut the price further its hard to say that a price cut will be able to bring sales up to a level thats higher than 2008. So in essence unless the PS3 gets some killer app or their wand really takes off they would have probably peaked in overall sales in 2008.

if they get the emulator yes. it's very likely, considering ps1 sales are rocking all the top 10 of PSN sales.

we have PS3 games for download since the PSN have no download limit, i expect sony gets to get there first.

and xbox games will get removed when 360 games come.

I would consider buying the new slim IF it had the 45nm chips and/or die shrunk RSX processor. But I wouldn't consider this a win for sony since it would not improve their tie ratio because I have a launch console PS3 already.

No, the PSN doesn't have any PS2 downloadable games, it was rumoured to be comming at one point but it ended up being false.

I reckon Sony would be re-releasing allot of their own classic PS2 games like ICO, and I'm sure konami would release zone of enders as well...the PS2 has allot of great games which are hard to find, and I know there is a market for it, just looking at places like Ebay shows there is, it's just a matter of Sony refining the tech to make it possible, and I think there close if that emotion engine patent is anything to go buy. that patent was made public recently but the EE has already been emulated on certain early 80GB PS3 since they fist hit retail, not only that but the details of what the patent tech is can also be applied to the graphic synthesizer, PS2 GPU, so it's a high possibility that the rumour just may have some foundation afterall.

That's awkward thinking Squill (marked green). How can the market be saturated when the 120 million seller of last gen so far only has sold 22 million consoles in 2.5 years this gen? And the video game console market has grown from 30 million consoles per year in last gen to 45 million consoles per year.

I agree on what you said about price elasticity and the rest though. That's something to think more deeply about.

Why don't they implement that already? I could picture myself getting a $299 PS3 with BC and purchasing download versions of Ico, Shadow of colossis and Okami (since they're hard to find in stores, even as used), but I ain't gonna wait for those games forever - they're getting (and feeling) older for every year that passes by.

From what I can see they first want to dry out the retail chains as well as their current stock, which is why that awesome bundle was just announced...I suppose they want to minimise loss so that they put them selvs in a situation where they can finally make money.

Also, I don't see the PS3 slim launching at $299, I reckon it will launch at $399, and the price cut will happen next year to coincide with the launch of God of war, that's how I reckon it'll go down...there's room for errors of course.
