its no longer about exclusives since almost every game is multiplat for ps3/360. its just about which one is cheaper now.

You said it best yourself:
"Sure, if the PS3 Slim comes out and there's a price cut it will increase sales of the console."

And the purpose of a PS3 Slim is what? Increase sales! Tada! Its not like SONY care about some make belive console race. Id say profit is their main concern.

I find it funny that most Sony fanboys here claim that the moment PS3 releases a slim version this will equal to total sales going off the roof! There's a fact t hat PS3 fanboys are forgetting: The reason why PSOne and PS2 Slim did so great was because the Playstation brand had already reach mass market success, had a great price and were the consoles with the most amount of AAA games.

Guess what? This is not the case this generation. Sure, if the PS3 Slim comes out and there's a price cut it will increase sales of the console. However the same will happen with a potential price cut for the  Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. They don't need to change the shape of the console to win, after all Nintendo has never changed the shape of their consoles and yet they had 2 winning generations.

Get with the program, PS3 will not be successful because of PS3 Slim, it will only be if somehow Sony manages to get developers to stop making games for the 360. Till that happens there's no way the 360 will just suddenly stop selling.

Discuss...

I fint it funny how ignorant you are, $400 kid.  Slim is all about the price cut for PS3 to get a mass market.  Smaller size is just a nice gimmick to help sales.  Ps3 has all the aaa games it needs, all it needs is a lower price.

Wii dont need a cut Nin wont do one, 360 is cheepo nuf a cut would send then back into the red and in hell with investors.  Either way they wont match a $100 cut.  And their $200 price advantage will decrease no matter what.  For what it costs 360 sales are falttering if it comp becomes a better deal more will chosee it over the 360 its not rocket science.

at $200 LESS

sales are 119k to 105k any decrease in that advantage will hurt the 360 badly, at a massive HALF price 360 is struggling to out sale the PS3 ok kid.  Any one with a brain can see 360 is in a very weak position, and its only gonna get worse as their price advantage shrinks and it will that is simply unavoidable.

I guess we now know why he has negative VG$.

Let me show you why they call me the velour fog. Hit it.

I met her in a club down in old Soho,

Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like coca cola,

C-o-l-a, cola.

She, walked up to me and she asked me to dance,

I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said;

Leela, L-e-e-l-a, Leela, Lee, Lee, Lee, Leela

Leeeeeeeelaaaaaaaa

The 360's gonna get a pricecut to what? Free?

Seriously, just don't even try to make such a stupid fanboy comment. This has been covered millions of times. Grow up.

Current 360 Consoles: $200/300/400
Average 360 sale price: $290 (meaning more $300/400 than $200)

Possible price cuts: $150/250/350 -- $150/200/250 -- $150/200/300 -- $150/250/300 -- etc.

And that still leaves room to cut the price at least once or twice more before the end of the generation in 3ish years. Still leaves room for a $130 or $99 arcade, and lets not forget Natal will be coming in early 2010 to really mix things up. I think the majority of the industry is more excited about Natal than a PS3 pricecut or slim of any kind.

---------------------------------------

Before the 360 price cut last year, the PS3 and 360 were the same price. Obviously at the same price it made the PS3 a lot more valuable. That's why the 360 finally lowered it's price which by then it could more than afford.

I asked all my friends, and they said they want to buy a 360. Even my friends with PS3's are either selling them to buy a 360 or buying 360's to go along with their PS3. Anecdotal evidence is meaningless.

Umm..wrong? If the average price is $290, that means that the arcade console accounts around half of the sales. The only way there are 'more $300/400' is if the average price is $300 or above.

Also..you people are off your rocker if you think they're going to cut the price. I guess technically it will be heralded as a price cut, but all they're going to do is move the pro and elite down a notch, meaning Pro will be $200 and Elite will be $300. They won't drop the price below $200 within the next year, and I'll take a bet with anyone on that. Especially considering the Natal launch and it being presumably bundled with the system when it launches.

We have winner! The average sale price is $290? Does that incluse a game or controller?

The fact that the average sale price is $290 indicates that the arcade is far and away the top selling SKU. I know that's the SKU I bought.

Where is the link which says that the average sale price is $290? Where is the link to MS saying the Pro sells the best?

Allow me to quote myself since you apparently can't do simple math:

I'm sorry but you are wrong.  The $300 Pro is the top selling model.  It was stated by MS recently.  The only time the arcade made up about 45% of the sales was during the holidays.  I don't know the exact percentages, but I think it is safe to say that about 50-60% are Pro, 30-40% are Arcade, and the last 10% or less are Elites, if that.  So combined the Pro/Elite makes up about 75% of sales in order for the average price to be $290.

65 * 300 = 19,500
25 * 200 =   5,000
10 * 400 =   4,000
-----------------------
                  28,500

28,500 / 100 = $285  So in actuallity the percentage of sales coming from the Pro/Elite models is around 70-80%.

And I was not saying they would cut the price, just showing fanboy on Steroids that they have plenty of options to cut the price to.

Link about average sale price:  http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=20714

I can't find the up-to-date one showing $290, but it is safe to say that after the big rush of the holidays making it $276, $290 is a normal rise since then.  If I find the more recent link that specifically states this, I'll update it for ya.

As to the Pro being the top selling SKU, Aaron Greenberg stated it in an interview.  I specifically remember reading the article on this site but it was a few months ago and I can't find it off hand either.  Once I find it, I'll update it for ya.

By the time the "PS3 Slim" will be released we will already be 4 years into this generation with (roughly) 120 Million consoles sold to (probably) 80 Million households. Most of the techie early-adopter types who will pay a premium for new and exciting hardware will have already bought a system, and the PS3's hardware can hardly be considered new and exciting anymore (at least on the level to attract early adopter types). We have hit a point in the generation where most of the (so called) "Hardcore" gamers will own (at least) one home console, and there will probably be a resurgence of PC gaming due to the capabilities of PCs moving further and further beyond the capabilities of home consoles. Basically, all that is left to buy into this generation are the "Low lying fruit" which are budget gamers (people who are unlikely to spend much more than $150 or $200 on a console unless it is a "Great Deal") and the unconventional gamers who are not particularly interested in the type of "Hardcore" gameplay experiences the HD consoles cater to. As I have said before, it is quite likely that a $150 XBox 360 Arcade or a $250 Wii with Wii Sports and Wii Fit are far more attractive options to the gamers who have yet to buy into this generation than a $300 PS3.

360 is a mere 50 away from that, if it failing at 200 it will fail at 150.  Especially since the arcade sku is a joke.

wii and waggle are attractive options to moms and kids not typical gamers.  I know plenty 25/35 years olds that will buy PS3 at a cheepr price.  400/500 is just tom much at this time.

360 is already cheepest by alot and it failing quite bad by struggling to out sale a much pricer product.  At 200 less 360 holds a small sales advantage, at 150 it might not even exist.  Can't escape that.

When PS3 gets a price cut and gets a slim model, PS3s sales will just zoom past the 360. It just will.

It's not failing.....

It's been outselling the PS3 by a steady 15-20% since the holidays.  And the top selling SKU is the Pro based on the average sale price of $290.

Also, don't forget Natal which will completely shake things up next year as far as the games, price of console bundled with tech, etc.

Obviously Natal will be bundled with new 360's just as the new Sony stuff.  So at that point they will either have to increase the price or take a loss and guess which one will probably cost more *cough* purple wands + ps eye *cough*

I know many 18-40 year olds that will buy a 360 at a cheaper price.  I also know many PS3 owners who are selling them to get a 360, or purchasing a 360 to go with their PS3.  $300 is still too much for the majority of the people out there who haven't boughten into a console yet.

Agree with OP.  the 'slim' editions just fed into the current momentum, they did no create new momentum.  I think slim+price cut would be the same as 'price cut'.  It's not the size of the console, it's the size of the price sticker on it that matters!

Trying to convince me the Wii is a real adult game machine 'if you play it right' is like trying to convince me Tofu tastes great 'if you just cook it right'
