My friend had no intention of buying one until he played mine a couple of days after I got it. Then the same thing happened to two of his uncles after playing his. The ps3 had an opposite effect, however. After people bought ps3s, they realized it had few games and a sparse release list, so the major hype Sony had at launch quickly disappeared.
The Wii launched pissed us off, too, because a good 40-50 of us froze our asses off sitting outside all night long, and then at around 8:45 this one guy walks up in a bermuda t-shirt and sandals, all nice and comfy, as if nothing is going on . We were like, "If he gets one..." and he ended up being #87 out of 87. We were so pissed.
I was going to camp for a ps3 as well, but everybody beat me to it. Most of them were damn ebayers, too. I still got one on Dec. 24th, one of the first 500,000 with Talladega Nights (such a crappy movie). |
Amazing. Hahahaha! That's gotta burn.
I never bought a console at launch before and didn't really take the Wii launch all that seriously either.
Unfortunately for me my casual stroll into the store with bermuda t-shirt, sandals and all didn't net me jack"sheets"! Hahahahahaha!
Me and my friend were hanging out that day and were messing around playing stuff on the older systems, then went to a Chinese restaurant around evening time thinking we had plenty of time left to go get one.
We hung around 'til about 10PM or so and said let's go up there and get it. We didn't feel like waiting in no daggone line, man. Hahahaha! We just said just pop up there and pick it up. We were sorta scared that it might not so easy to pick up but then we felt those fears were invalid when we got to the local Wal-Mart. We looked around and didn't see any lines. Went right to the electronics department and THEN tell us what the real story is. There WAS a line and we had to get a ticket to get one but then all tickets were held by the line-waiters.
I said "damn." And then I wanted to come away with something for our efforts and tried to get Zelda. Whoops. Preordered and reserved. There were 9 of 'em in the case and all of a sudden the clerk just snatched all of 'em right up right before my eyes not missing the last one at all.
Only after leaving the store did we find out where the line was. On the side of the building outside. OHHHH THAT'S where the line was. Pretty big for this small town I live in. The adjacent gamestore on the plaza (Rhino's now Gamestop GRRRR!) was line-heavy too and we knew to just forget getting a Wii on launch day.
I lucked up and got mine by pure dumb luck on December 6th on a paying bills run stepping in to look at the Wii case (whimpering puppy pawing the window style) to see what was going on. December 5th I went in and found out Wiis were on sale starting 8AM the next morning on the 6th! Working a nightshift made it easy for me to get there on time and I was #12 in even after getting there at 6:30AM! Only 30 were for sale and that line went beyond 30 let me tell ya. My friend didn't get his until many months later. I felt so bad for him. Luckily he had an inside contact which let him know when to pick one up.
Launch day stories are fun. Um, what was the topic again?
