10 million is a big, scary number. According to VGChartz, only 31 console and handheld games so far have managed to break 10 million copies sold. Just getting Halo 3 across that mark will be a huge achievement.

That's not counting Pc games though, which would significantly increase that number.

By 2-3 at best.

Guess again, handsome.

Honey, I had already assumed that the Sims 1 was already counted in that 31, I guess then I was out by 1 because of that.

Guess again:

Bejeweled
Bejeweled 2
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Counter-Strike
Counter-Strike: Source
Diablo 2
Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction
Half-Life
Half-Life 2
Lineage
Lineage 2
Peggle
The Sims
The Sims 2
Starcraft
Starcraft: Broodwar
World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade

That's 18 titles that reached or are almost +10 millions (and will reach it). That most impressive thing is that only 4 of them have been released before 2000. Again, I may have miscounted since we don't know for certain how much they sold or if there are other titles that reached 10 millions.

Shio you're goign to have to cite numbers for all of those. If you don't mind.

I wouldn't even bother.

I have NEVER heard of Diablo 2 selling that much, is all.

Modern warfare 2 it has a good chance, like 80%, specially after the cod 5 sales.

and a source please. CSS sold 10 millions copies as a stand alone game? seriously?

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Bejeweled and Bejeweled 2

As of August 19th 2008, Beweled franchise hits 25 millions sold.

Ofcourse it includes mobile versions, but PC is where it's at. It's been almost a year since this last figure but Bejeweled and Bejeweled 2 didn't stop selling, so the 25 millions figure can be considered outdated.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

If the X360 version reached 7.5 millions, I don't see why the PC version wouldn't be able to reach 10 millions, especially considered it is still selling well, coming in and out of D2D and Steam's top sellers list.

I have always said that COD4 would reach 10 millions on PC eventually. Unfortunately there's no proof of how much it sold except for the fact that in it's first years it was always one of the top 5 selling PC games every month, selling on par with WoW and Sims but had the advantage of being sold great on several digital services like Steam (and still is).

Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike: Source

CS sold 4.2 millions on retail and CS:S sold 2.9 millions (as of December 3rd 2008), but the digital sales of both games should easily dwarf those figures. CS:S still reaches 90k-100k concurrent players in it's peak, 5 years after it's release (CS has 60k-70k concurrent players peak). Both games still sell on retail and digitally (CS:S is always on Steam's Top Ten sellers, and both CS:S and CS appear every now and then on retail top sellers lists).

Diablo 2 and Diablo 2: LOD

As of June 28th 2008, Diablo franchise has sold 18.5 millions copies (source). Diablo 1 sold 2.5 millions copies (source), and Diablo 1's expansion probably didn't sell much since it had poor reviews and wasn't even made by Blizzard, but let's give 1 more million for D1+Expansion as a safety measure.

That leaves 15 millions copies for Diablo 2 and it's expansion. Since it's Blizzard, I expect most sales to be from Battlechests (they count Battlechests as 1 copy even though it has both original game and expansion) . Plus the unaccounted past year which probably gave Diablo 2 and LOD maybe another millions sales. Yeah, I'd say Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction have reached 10 millions sold each (or will soon enough).

Half-Life and Half-Life 2

Half-life: 9.3 millions sold on retail (source is same as the CS games), plus whatever sales from Steam. 100% 10 million-seller.

Half-Life 2: 6.5 millions on retail + 3 millions from Orange Box + Steam sales = 100% 10 million-seller.

Lineage and Lineage 2

Lineage franchise sold over 43 millions copies (source). Lineage 2 has over 14 millions costumers (source), while Lineage 1 was even more successful than it's sequel ever during it's peak (source).

Peggle

Peggle sold 25 millions across all platforms (source), however PC is the main version and as sold for longest.

Sims and Sims 2

Not bothering with this one.

Starcraft and Broodwar

As of February 11th 2009, the series sold 11 millions (source). Like Any other Blizzard game, I expect the large majority of sales to be from Battlechests, and I'm sure it could sell a couple more millions until it fizzles out. And it's now available digitally on Blizzard's store even.

WoW and Burning Crusade

WoW no doubt by far surpassed the 10 million figure. Burning Crusade sold 3.5 millions in the first month (source) and has never left top PC charts since, so nothing to doubt here.

so there is no concrete evidence that CS:S sold anywhere close to 10 millions... also, the concurrent players would include HL2 owners.

Even if CSS sells on Steam for 50,000 copies per month in the last 5 years, that's 3 millions. In addition to the 2.9 million copies in the retail, it's still 4.1 million away from 10 millions. Maybe my estimate is too low but I would like to know how you think CSS or even CS sold/will sell 10 million copies as stand alone games.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

haha CoD4 on PC close to 10 million!!!111

http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/58537

May 09 - Activision states that CoD 4 MW is at 13 million on all platforms. At this point of time it is at 11.6 million at Xbox360 and PS3 combined. You do the math what might be left for the PC version. And remember there are 500k Nintendo DS as well.

so 900k PC games sold for the PC in May 09. CoD 4 must have had a CRAZY month this June.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
