no is fine.

for those people that were planning on installing it on more than one computer in your house, that is piracy, simple as that.

Although there will be no lan, there will be programs that will allow lan play.

Please explain to me how is that piracy? So am I not allowed to play my copy of Gow on my friends 360?

Were you purposely trying to give the worst metaphor you could think of?

Installing a game on multiple computers for the purpose of other people playing the game without paying, is piracy.

He probably didn't see the posts you were referring to.  Taken out of whatever the original context is (I don't recall it either), "installing it on more than one computer in your house" sounds perfectly reasonable as long as only one person at a time is playing.  I was scratching my head a bit too.

He knew what I was talking about. Which is specifically why he mentioned bringing his game to a friends house.

In other words, the topic of discussion here was and still is, lan. Installing a game on more than one computer for the sake of lan play is piracy and illegal. I bet half the people here don't even realize that.
To be reasonable, I did say "in your house" which may have somehow thrown him off, though I don't think it did. I only said that because lan parties are pretty much dead. Nobody lugs their computers around with them anymore because of superior internet speeds, even with dial-up and dsl.

On top of that, Blizzard has assured the public and the fans that Battlenet2.0 will be so amazing, that even if you brought your computer to a friends house, you would still much rather play on battlenet than on lan. BNet 2.0 is just that good.

@mendicate bias

if you knew how a program called LC works...you could see how LAN option would be used in piracy...LC let 5 different PCs to share one cd-key to play on bnet...that's one example...and another is to bypass bnet connection directly linking players to host...Blizzard probably imo took out lan option cuz of that reason...

i still want lan option back...LC works so well too..pings are so good when host makes games with LC..

Like I said in my post, there will always be a workaround. You think people won't figure out how to lan this game? You're sadly mistaken. There will be programs and hacks, they just won't come out for at least 3 months after release.

Maybe where you are they are dead, but those of us with friends prefer lan parties over internet play

Yeah, but blizz has said that battlenet2.0 will be the same as playing on a lan, except over the internet.

Wait so what is he referring to? He still hasn't explained how installing it on more than one computer in your house is pirating. Besides don't you need the dvd in the drive to play, how is it pirating simply to have it installed on more than one computer when you can't play them simultanously?

I still don't understand how some of you can defend basic fundamental features that don't cost the developer anything and are to your benefit being removed. If you think it's going to slow down the piracy of the game one iota then you clearly have no idea how versatile and adaptive pirates are. The game will be available for download with full functionality soon after release whether you like it or not. All your doing is creating a inconvenience for your self.

looks like we are starting a debate of customer rights vs corporate ip.

in this case, I just want to drink beer with my friends and play starcraft without server hassles.
By all means dont let me stop you, I find this kind of discussion fascinating.

Yes I am a fan of the Playstation 3, but I am an even bigger fan of intelligent and rational dialog. (If you are up for an intelligent exchange of ideas, you are more than welcome to add me as a friend)

You should have read his recent post:  "...the topic of discussion here was and still is, lan. Installing a game on more than one computer for the sake of lan play is piracy and illegal. I bet half the people here don't even realize that."

Even having no idea what the posts are that he originally referred to, it becomes crystal clear that he meant that installing it on multiple PCs in your house for the purpose of LAN parties is piracy, because whoever plays but doesn't own the game is pirating at that point.  With the "LAN party" part understood, it's obvious that they would indeed be playing them simultaneously.

@Ail

actually when I am with my parents I play starcraft with my brother. There have been other case when I travel with friends on a train.

and yes, both situations leave me without internet. Aside from that, there is no way to be sure that their servers will never go down.
Do you feel that everyone one on a LAN is a pirate for some reason? I fail to understand the rabid defense of blizzard giving you less of a product.

I don't think you understand how Wow is.

Wow servers go down for a couple minutes at any time of the day( which is very rare except on patch day) and Blizzard' forums get flooded with posts within a few minutes..

So yes, I trust Blizzard in being able to provide a stable Battlenet, they have demonstrated the last 5 years that stable servers  is something they can reliably provide...

I don't feel like everyone playing on LAN is a pirate but providing a game which will lack its major feature without a valid CD-Key to play MP is going to deter a lot of the casual pirates( which are the majority, most of the people that download music online illegally will not go through the process of connecting to a private server with little security guarantee to play a MP game, heck most woudn't even know how to set that up).

Sure the hardcore hackers which represent a very small percentage of the gamers will probably find a way around but the majority of the ppls won't and will have to make the choice between purchase the game or not play it and in the end a decent percentage of them will purchase it which will be to the benefit of every other person that purchased it ( Blizzard will make more cash, there will be more bnet users, bnet will be enhanced more, SC2 will get more support through patches and expansion, the support will last longer...).

Piracy has to end somewhere, right now it is getting so widespread on PC that the people that don't do it are those being singled out by the others gamers as being stupid, it's nice that Blizzard is taking a step to fix this...

One of the feature you can already expect from bnet 2 is an ELO like ranking ( like chess) and the capability to be randomly matched against players of similar skills as you if you desire so ( it's technology Blizzard has already deployed in others games). Due to that I expect the leaderboard on bnet to be a lot more reliable than they ever have been for SC2 and to trully reflect who are the best players worldwide...

I fully expect Diablo 3 to be the same and have some of its features only available on Battlenet to encourage ppls to buy legit copies too ( the best runewords in D2 were only available on bnet, I expect more features like this, making the bnet experience superior to the single player one).

PS : And to me it does not feel like less of a product. I play online a lot and I find the experience provided by online servers a lot superior to the LAN one... Since I have reliable internet ( which has been over 6 years by this day) I haven't played a LAN game...
