Forums - Microsoft - Should I go through with this?

Actually your friend may not be lying. On CAG a a year ago Hot Topic was selling the Halo 3 Limited edition for around $200 or $100 (I forget which) anyways for some reason Hot Topic never scanned the serial numbers into their system/had confusion with MS. Basically everyone had to send in a copy of their receipt/proof of purchase to show proof that they purchased the system and what not.

If you do a google search for Halo 3 XBox 360 through hot topic you may pull more information on this.

Tell your friend to pull up his credit card transactions if he bought this through hot topic.

... if he didn't then I have no idea why MS isn't honoring the warranty.

It's just that simple.

I don't remember the fine details but MS *WAS* asking for receipts for Halo 3 XBoxs that were sold through hot topic.

The Halo 3 console sale was also mentioned on Kotaku awhile back. It was back in 08 according to my google search.

he could have called before may or april. Before that microsoft was charging for e74 errors. However, now that is included and anybody that got charged for it should of had it refunded by now.

Yeah, as for the receipt thing, microsoft wouldn't even be able to check it. They don't have access to other stores internal records, that is why they take the serial number on the back of the box instead of asking for a reciept.

Also, they will give you a halo edition, they might gut the insides and replace it with new components, but you will get the same case back. If I were you, I would want them to gut the insides.

I think this is why. He told me that he called like around 2 months ago and they were charging him for the E-74 repair. Thanks for clearing that up.

He bought it at a store near his house, not through the internet.

Thats pretty strange. Regardless, they shouldn't be doing that anymore. Call and ask 'em.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Ok well then forget what I said if he's telling the truth. I just remembered the whole RROD/E74 fiasco on CAG when people were buying these in 08. It was a pretty big deal to get a new halo 3 edition system back then especially at that price with the hard drive.

warranties go with the item, not a person, unless someone registered the system under their name, so in some cases the system can be retrieved if stolen.

My guess is he bought the system used from somewhere and when he called to get it fixed it was registered under someone's name, and your friend said he was the first and only owner, now MS wants proof it was his..

Is that the case?

You can get it repaired online. Just make sure it's a registered console.
