Forums - Nintendo - So, I beat The Conduit. My mini review.

I just know that if there is a Conduit 2, it'd be quiet amazing if they did 1 with that kind of time and budget.

hmm...

why do you put level design ("go from A to B, pump the guts full of bullets everything that moves")
under "story" ?

it's one of the most essential elements of "gameplay" (= controls + level design)

About your final line:

From what we've seen, it doesn't look like the Grinder will be any more (probably even less) impressive visually than the conduit (which is disappointing because I thought the conduit looked alright in videos and I thought the Grinder looked horrible).

Good to hear about the controls though, I get the feeling (due to the nature of the wiimote and customisability of the conduits controls) that it will get marked down because people couldn't find a control setting they liked with the limited time they had to get the review out OR people might claim it's just HVS being lazy.

Let us know how online goes, I might get this game if online is good.

The Grinder has a year and a half before it gets released...

Remember how the Conduit looked a year ago?

It's 100% certain that the Grinder will look better than the Conduit.

It took me about 7 hours and now is time to do my mini review:

- The Story Sucks: Yep for all those claiming it would be generic, yes it is. No cinematic cutscenes, VO is terrible, TV sound effects are average (the wiimote sounds look awesome) and the game is linear to death: go from A to B, pump the guts full of bullets everything that moves.

- Visually it semi-sucks: I did some close views to pretty much everything in the game, I was amazed how things simply don't lose detail as we approach it, many unseen effects on the Wii, some serious shading and bump mapping work, Agent Ford hands and weapons are one of the best I've seen including PS360 games... But it looks like shit!!!! Seriously, the randomness of the objects is annoying, so many awkward repeated stuff thrown into to fulfill the scenario.  HVS should hire a serious Art Director. Graphically its a raw diamond. Impressive but the way it is designed sucks.

- Gameplay: This is were it shines. The FPS with the best gameplay actually is The Conduit. It's simply perfect, never though Medal of Honor Heroes 2 could be beaten, but this is way beyond it. Absolutely ZERO flaws in the gameplay, and the cursor itself is even more sensitive than what it is navigating the wii menu. A milimetric change in the position appears on screen. I used a custom layout were I changed pretty much everything.

Multiplayer: Have yet to test it.

Just to finish: I was fuc**ng bored playing through the Story Mode, but I've finished it. I will have much more fun on the game playing it online, not on story mode, just like CoD that I didn't even finished the main campaign. The HVS engine can do wonders on the Wii, many detail into the objects and particle effects, water effects are stunning and gameplay is god. Now they just need an Art Director and make deals with some good sound studios and good actors.

Hope The Grinder and Gladiator A.D both fulfill The Conduit's flaws and takes the engine beyond.

I recall in an IGN podcast that Bozon had said that HVS's artist would be a challnege for The Conduit, that he felt that the tech was BETTER then they were, lol. Unless they hired a new staff expect the same artists for Galaditor A.D., and The Grinder, lol.

...All that being said I'd give it an 8.6/10.

From what I've seen from the grinder it already looks a lot better then the conduit after 2 months. The art design is a lot better in the game, but I've always been a desert fan in real life and in games. It's a gorgeous landscape. The mountains looked gorgeous in the game... Other wii games make ugly mountains lol, but it looked good in the grinder. I don't care for gladiators AD, so I won't buy that game.

i haven't played it yet (perhaps won't ever) but i can absolutely agree with you on one point, "HVS should hire a serious Art Director." every screen i've seen is visually impressive but artistically generic and that's the main reason i'm not sure i'm ever going to pick this game up.

I dont underatand why people say the story sucks. I mean its nothing amazing..but its good. The little touches with all the radio broadcast were nice little details...and the VO imo were great. though short the single player was ok. online is awesome...untill the hackers ruin it...

I agree: it does its job quite fine, and, like you said, the radio's are actually quite interesting to listen to.

To lavish praise upon this title, the assumption of a common plateau between player and game must be made.  I won't open my unworthy mouth.

i think from what im reading it sounds an aweful lot like how halo2 was sucky story mode but online multiplayer rocked. to me the graphics dont mean nothin its the gameplay i am more worried about and the online. cause that is whats gonnna make it a hit or miss. that is why halo2 is considered great is cause of its multiplayer. unlike halo for the pc which falls so short of "eh" for multiplayer and the story mode is good that is why i never got halo2 for the pc. cause the story mode is dumb and on most FPS the story mode is dumb. teh only game with an awesome story mode is half life and half life 2.

Multiplayer is a blast.

Don't ned friend codes, although you might for wii speak. (I don't have wii speak).

The voice acting was fine. Sometimes it's too soft and I had to turn the music down to hear the radio good, etc...

There was some cut scenes between chapters (about 9), but most could be measured in seconds...

Could be, could be, but this leads to one thing that I have been thinking about...Remember The Conduit HVS funded themselves, and what I've read The Grinder and Gladiators AD, are being backed by an investor(s), I wonder if HVS limited funding effect what they could do on The Conduit.

...I know one thing that Eric from HVS said that I like is that the profits from The Conduit will go into making the second one(If it happens).
