Forums - Sony - SCEE: PSP-Go Takes Advantage Of Early Adopter "Premium"

Charging a "Premium" to early adopters on a new piece of hardware makes sense.

Charging a "Premium" on a new iteration of an old piece of hardware doesn't.

I still don't get a single reason why someone would want to pay more than they do now to get the Go. Could someone educate me on that matter?

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

EXACTLY, it doesnt do anything more than the 3000! this just show sony is greedy and this will only kill any chances the PSP had to be more popular and gain market share

Isn't this the same as when Nvidia, AMD/ATI, intel release new versions of their chips?
Price goes up, then plummets back to normal pretty soon.
I don't see the issue myself.
Why is it now a bad thing when Sony follows the norm?

You can get a class 6 (6MB per second read) SD card for $30 on Newegg. Considering there would be no margin for Newegg and no margin for the make/brand the cost to install would have to be a little less than $20 if not as low as $10-$15.

iSuppli estimates the iPhone 3G S 16GB costs 179$ to make and the teardown has the 16GB pegged at 24$.

More details here http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/06/24/cost_to_build_apples_new_iphone_3g_s_estimated_at_179.html

Also, lol at leo-j quoting memory stick prices...

wait... your trying to compare PC upgrade components to a PSP?

I mean last I checked, when you buy a new video card/processor it's an Upgrade..

a better comparison would be iPod's and DS's:

Apple/Nintendo upgrade their hardware to give you more bang for your buck.

The PSP-Go is not an upgrade..

You actually go backwards if you bought one..

- UMD Support

- Screen Size

- Old Accessories

Why would you pay more for that? because it slides?

Sony is banking on "it's something new" approach..

People don't understand, you can have a PSP-Go right now if you have a PSP, just go buy a big memory card.

+You have a bigger screen then the Go

+UMD Support and Download Support

+ALL The PsP games, not having to wait for updates to the download shop.

-Slide Screen

As someone already mention that's the way electronic market works. Personally I'll buy this piece of hardware despite high price and lack of major improvements simply because I like design. It is even more portable now. Yes it's still PSP and it's $80 more expensive than regular one. I can pay higher price for it.

How about we talk about it fairly the machine does have some positives.

+s:
Bluetooth Functionality

16GB On board Storage

50% smaller

40% lighter

More comfortable controls

-s:

Lack of UMD support(though they have some type of redemption program in the works which should help lessen the loss)

smaller screen

Need to purchase new accessories

I can see how the above reasons might be reason enough to upgrade. Especially since it's a portable gaming device and i'm sure portability should be pretty high on its list of priorities.

Fun Fact: I can buy a 16GB memstick Micro for ~ 95$ from amazon and have a 32 GB PSPGo.
Total = 345$

Cost of a 32GB PSP3000??? At best you can find a 16GB cards for 60$ the adapter need is 5 bucks minimum. Then there's the $170 PSP. So that's 295 as your lowest deal....

I'm still getting the Go

And for those of you thinking "PSP3000 with 32GB?? WTF!!!" It's actually 29, but meh

Here you go

The reply above yours has the link to a $45.00 16gig Pro Due..

You can find cheaper, and by the time PSP-Go comes out there will be even cheaper ones.

When the seller's country is China, and the site looks a bit off, it's likely a knock-off. There are plenty of sites that sell fake memory sticks that just don't work right. The site mentions the memory stick is a third party product, it has a picture of a Sony Memory Stick but makes no mention of Sony or what company even produced it. Chances are very high that $45 memory stick is a fake.

Though, the $45-50 price-point for a 16GB isn't that far off if you are really to look around for a deal. Heck, I think there was one a while back for a $30 16GB stick after a $90 mail-in rebate.

There's a lot of people who belive UMD is useless junk and average consumer is unaware of problems with digital distribution. PSP Go is for them. BTW do we really know if it's memory stick inside ? If they were redisigning it they could have put SD card just as well to drive the price down
