The game might only be 6 hours long bu, and I'm only guessing here but guessing I'm right, many of the textures and sounds are one shot and big so they take a lot of space.  The game more than likely reserves 2gigs of space and uses that to stream in textures while you're playing so you don't have to wait for it two load of the disc.

This is certainly an interesting observation at the least. I suspect that since PS3 developers know that the hard drive is always present in a PS3, they move a ton of stuff to the HD to reduce load times. I was just going through game saves on my 360 last night and deleting some and was surprised that the files were 6MB or bigger. I didn't think it took that much to save some "statistics"...

I'll leave the true technical reasoning to those that know, but the first question that comes to mind (for me, anyway) is does this have anything to do with the speed at which the Blu Ray can deliver content -- i.e. not fast enough for some parts of the game?

Exactly correct.  It simplifies users' understanding of the games requirements when you combine the cache and save game requirements.



They should have focused on a fast-loading optical medium like GC and Wii had (they have optimized DVDs). rather than HDD streaming: you save on RAM and HDD manufacturing.

That would be nice if the 360 Oblivion did that. I finally got it this weekend (had it on the PC since release but my PC could barely play it) and the experience has sucked because of the load times. The game constantly freeze for a few seconds in the overworld, towns, menus and very often stops for 5-10-ish seconds with now loading popping up at the bottom of the screen quite often. On top of that you constantly see things pop in and out and I've have very many sound bugs and it's just shitty.

I had heard complaints about the loading on the 360 but I assumed those were just long loading screens now I see what they're complaining about. The game is beautiful the piss poor performance on the 360 should not have won it game of the year.

And for the PC edition I had a lot more complaints beyond frame rate that made me think it should not be worth of Game of the Year.
