Forums - Sony - I don't like the PSP - ergonomically speaking

I heard the PSP Go fits a lot more comfortably into your hand.

The touch screen's main weakness is that so many devs think they need to use it. This ends up becoming a pain as you try to hold the console with one hand and make marks on the screen.

You'd have to be missing a thumb to think it's hard to hold the DS and use the stylus at the same time.

tell me, how do you hold it?

Do you hold the ds on your palm?

Or do you hold it with your left hand?

If you hold it with your left hand, where do you rest your right hand? Do you just hover it in the air?

EDIT: NExt time, when responding to a comment, don't make a noob mistake. Respond with reasons why, or at least think it through first. The only way to play a ds with a stylus heavy game, besides holding the ds sideways like a book, is to rest it on something.

Wait for the Go. Destructoid seems to agree with me about how the analog placement is better.

The only thing that bothers me about the psp is the screen. In terms of button layout, I prefer it over the DS. The psp fits into one's hand since it's curved and the button layout is nicely spaced. The analog stick comes in handy when it comes to moving around.

to avoid flame i'll keep it at that.

My son has a PSP 2000. I don't think I'll be using it again. Doubt we'll be getting the Go either. My son uses his iPod touch so much more, there seems to be no place for PSP in our house anymore. That PSPhone concept looked pretty appealing though.

No problems myself, maybe you have to get used to it?

Hmm I got one recently and it's not big enough for me to hold it really comfortably.

What I hate about the PSP is mostly the directional pad and analog stick. The pad just doesn't work when playing games like Gradius where you need to move diagonally a lot (instead I have to press up/down and another direction...). It's possible to move diagonally, but man, I have to press so fricking hard that it hurts after a while. So, what I usually do I cut a round piece of cardboard, then tape it under the four pad buttons so I can move more easily! How to mod a PSP directional pad in 2 minutes! xD

Now, you might be wondering why didn't I use the analog stick? I did, and it hurts after a while because your thumb is placed in a really weird way (especially in a game where you need to use the L button)... so I prefer my solution.

I always wished that Sony would fix this obvious problem. Sadly, I doubt the PSP Go is going to be any different. This is why I didn't buy a PSP yet, so yes, ergonomically speaking, I hate the PSP.

The DS is not better though, especially when playing games like The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Unless you play on a table, your hand will cover parts of the bottom screen while you're trying to slash an enemy, and then you get hit or miss a trap or something... that sucks. :/

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

never managed to hold a handheld without having pain in my hands... even when they were smaller in the time of the GB.

The only way arround that is the DS sitting on a table and you using the pen.

I'm amazed that nobody mentioned the baddly chosen place for the on-off button, which you can turn off by accident, plus the fact that the hold button is in the same slider, wich is inconvinient to say the least. But is such an amazing piece of hardware that I can overlook this facts.
