Forums - Sony - I don't like the PSP - ergonomically speaking

My son has a PSP and while I was in hospital yesterday I borrowed it off him to keep me entertained during the boring hours of nothing to do. I found I just didn't like the way it sat in my hands and I don't particularly like the arrangement of the buttons. I tried playing Ratchet and Clank, and Crash Tag Team Racing, but with neither game was it a comfortable experience. Seems like the PSP is good for a lot of things (movies, music, interweb browsing, and even games that look good) but for me the gaming experience is diminished too much by the ergonomics of the machine. A pity really.

I have a feeling I'd find the DS similarly vexing, though the touchscreen pen might make some things easier. Give me a classic controller any day I guess.

Anyone else find the PSP ergonomically annoying?

The touch screen's main weakness is that so many devs think they need to use it. This ends up becoming a pain as you try to hold the console with one hand and make marks on the screen.

what psp was it? If its the 1000 I understand

I've used a PSP once. There is something about joysticks........I think it needs a 2nd one or something. I don't even remember. Was playing Resistance Retribution.

Overall, cool system though.

I borrowed my sister's PSP to play GTA: Liberty City Stories a while back. I don't recall having problems with the button layout, but the placement of the analog nub did make my thumb hurt.

Have you had any problems with Game Boys or other handhelds?

You'd have to be missing a thumb to think it's hard to hold the DS and use the stylus at the same time.

I have the original PSP and it hurts my hands after a while.

I just rest the DS on my torso when I'm playing touch screen heavy games. It's a whole lot easier than actually holding the DS in midair with one hand.

you all need to just stop hating on the psp-1000 :-/

Yup PSP is one big and ugly system. Yes Ive also held the 2000 and 3000. PSP Go doesnt look any better.
DSLite I think is perfect layout. I dont really like the hard buttons on the DSi and the Phat is just disgusting. Ive never had problems holding the DS up and using the touchscreen. Some of you sound lazy. =P
