Forums - Nintendo - Reggie Mehs Halo 3 Sales

there will be a definate large increase in hardware for the week, and possibly a week or two after, but it won't be comparitively large.... for a game that sells over 2 million on it's first day a 100k hardware increase is small.

I think the "Halo fans already have a 360" argument is bunk. Do a lot of them already have the 360, yes, but I'm sure there are just as many out there who were waiting to buy a 360, and Halo tipped the scales for them. Plus, the Halo-edition 360 should drive additional hardware sales. I expect to see a sizeable bump in NA hardware sales.

I totally agree; I predict * looks into his crystal ball * 150k+

Ok so you think it is bunk yet you predict 150K. That is only 60K more than the total two weeks previous. Even if we assume the first day total of 2.4 million for the week, that means only 1 in 40 didn't have a console. So 97.5% of Halo buyers already had the console and that is not a sizeable percentage? Now weekly totals for Halo should be larger making your numbers more absurd.

I agree with Reggie, and I think the 360 will move more like 350,000. Yes that is a big relative bumb but compared to the numbers of copies Halo sold it is not that big. That still is only 15%. I hear people talk like every other person was buying an Xbox. That would imply 1,000,000 consoles moved. If that happened I will eat my hat.

I think long term the Xbox weekly totals might be 10% higher for 18 months or so due to Halo. But for the September and October I would atribute 500,000 consoles total to Halo 3.

Funny thing, you "ommited" the + from the 150k.

He's absolutely correct I think. And any bump the 360 gets won't last very long. Certainly the 360 is not going to have near the sales the Wii does this holiday season, in the US or anywhere else. Halo 3 is just the biggest example of more of the same: games that appeal to hardcore FPS/action game fans. The 360 is still going to have a tough time getting any casual gamers or hardcore gamers like me who aren't particularly big FPS fans.

This is what I said all along. It wouldn't be that much of a system seller. It's safe to say that if it's true what ioi said about 360 reaching just 200k last week, then this is VERY BAD for Microsoft. 3rd place is looking even more likely.

With that said, Microsoft is doing very well this holiday milking the existing fanbase for huge software sales. Very well indeed.

He isn't "mehing" as much as repeating the "people who want game X have already bought console Y!" claim. I personally don't buy it at all, see the 360 selling over 100k in the US on the week before Halo 3 is released, but it's not as bad as the headline makes it seem.

And it makes about as much sense as Wii owners supposedly being GC owners (in order to claim the record speed sales will stall at about 20+ milllion).

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

it wont hurt it--i mean we can all agree on that--but after the initial burp in sales what will be next--sure xbox has some great games but most of the people only know about halo--i think they really creadted a monter and its going to come back and bite them in the A$$

So by your assumptions the same thing should happen to Sony with MGS4. I think MS has a big hit on their hands that will sell systems for a long time. It may not sell a new console with every purchase but what game has?

I dont know if anythign will happen, its all up in the air right now and we wil have to see if after the smoke clears if all the hype aroud ahlo will help or hurt them

As far as MGS4 goes...??? it does seem to be the only game they have toted lately--I know of killzone and i think there was a racing game comming but other then that...ya got me

Ok yeah I missed the + sorry.

But my point is that Halo 3 is wildly sucessful. However most 80% + of buyers already owned a 360. We applaud games for pushing out an extra 50,000 consoles, but those are average hits who are moving a few hundred thousand units or maybe a million in a lifetime. Halo is on another level and I think MS was hoping the consoles sales would be too, especially with the new SKU. The Elite saw a 23,000 unit bump when it was released.

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.
