Forums - General - Suspected U.S. Strike Kills at Least 60 in Pakistan

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/24/world/asia/24pstan.html?ref=global-home

First three paragraphs:

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — An airstrike believed to be carried out by a United States drone killed at least 60 people at a funeral in South Waziristan on Tuesday, residents of the area and local news reports said.

Details of the attack, which occurred in Makeen, remained unclear, but the reported death toll was exceptionally high. If the reports are indeed accurate and if the attack was carried out by a drone, the strike would be perhaps the deadliest since the United States began using the aircraft to fire remotely guided missiles at members of theTaliban and Al Qaeda in the tribal areas of Pakistan.

If confirmed, the strike would be the 23rd by a United States drone this year, as the Obama administration has intensified a policy inherited from the Bush administration.

(...)

If I was from Pakistan I would be very pissed off...

Even if you are trying to do a good thing in a foreign country, occupying another country always has huge disadvantages. The people usually end up hating you even if you help them out.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Obama could slit peoples throats, and it would still somehow be Bush's fault to most of the world.

How in the hell are air strikes in a region Obama intensified fighting this long into, something he inherited?

Unbelievable.

@Mafoo. Airstrikes were carried out under the Bush administration, they have continued and instensified under the Obama administration. I don't see how thats arguable, its not saying that the strike is Bush's fault - or even if the policy is bad. Just that the policy was originally started under Bush.

As for the strike, I'm not going to condemn it until more information comes out. If it turns out (as it almost certainly will) that civilians were killed then its another stupid strike by a US military that seems incompetent at directing its drones in the right area. If it has killed more civilians then they definately need to stop firing the damned things as they obviously have no control of who they end up hitting, so innocent civilians die. That and its a PR disaster for the US.

Hmm, who would the target have been?

I mean I doubt there would just be a random attack, regardless of country responsible.

Sure. That's why it's in there. It was not placed in that article to defect blame one bit. Just to state a fact.

I'd say so. You're awfully defensive about a very small mention.

Not everything in the media is an attack on the conservatives.

Qari Zainuddin, second from right, with his bodyguards. An assassin loyal to the Pakistani Taliban leader, Baitullah Mehsud, killed Mr. Zainuddin on Tuesday.

An airstrike believed to have been carried out by a United States drone killed at least 60 people at a funeral for a Taliban fighter in South Waziristan on Tuesday, residents of the area and local news reports said.

Sounds like the drone got 60 of his Taliban friends too.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.
