you are forgetting better controls and harder content because of that, not to mention better draw distance by far. |
Except those things have absolutely nothing to do with this. Superior controls and draw distance were in the PC version from day 1. The spike in users happened after the sale and free weekend promotion. Therefore, the logical conclusion is that the sale/promotion are the cause, not the controls/draw distance.
(I own the PC version, by the way.)
Edit: The shocking thing for me is that the games had similar userbases across platforms for most of the year. I would have been sure the PC version was bigger.
That's when i bought the the PC version...for $23...sweet! I already had the 360 version, so now I'm multi-platform with L4D, and i will do the same for L4D2!
I am more interested in how they collected their data.
Whilst looking at Steam's data, I noticed something interesting.
There are 169,610 players currently playing the top 75 games on Steam.
There are 157,946 players currently playing Halo 3.
*sigh* That free weekend was great and I didn't get much sleep.

Nah. Something has to be up there. There's no way the entirety of Steam's online multiplayer is the equivalent of just Halo 3.

http://store.steampowered.com/stats/
You can copy and paste the Steam games list into excel and then do a =SUM and you will get the total easily.
1.13mil on steam
and just jumped to 1.2+mil
nm you are talking about 75 top games, this is not the steam peak time yet, wait like one or 2 more hours.

Where did you get the 169,610 from? All I have is how many Steam users are online and it's above 1 million.
