Forums - Gaming - Why the Chinatown wars PSP port is good news for the DS.

I'm talking about the system strengths, not just the control inputs. The PSP is a graphically superior system. rockstar has already said the PSP version will have improved graphics, voice acting and video ( I believe thats what they said). I also wouldn't be surprised if we get 3d character models instead of those sprites. And Rockstar has clearly figured out how to merge what's going on in each screen, or else this PSP port wouldn't be happening.

Oh sure the minigames will be a lot more fun on the DS, but there's plenty of reason to think the "Wars" franchise can be gameplay successes on both consoles.

The touch screen controls only served as an annoyance since the majority of the game is played with the D bad and you use the stylus to open your drug bag, search through trash etc.

Agreed, they should have made all game controlled by stylus. Annoying, but minor flaw.

I'm going to disagree with the OP and say that this is one of the worst GTA's I've ever played and is over hyped- pretty much like every M rated game to come out on a Nintendo console recently (Madworld I'm looking at you).

Yes, and you'd be so informed of how overrated all the M rated games on Nintendo consoles are considering you own 6 games across both platforms, none of which are M rated.

I can't be happy: a DS exclusive is now a DS non-exclusive. All the people saying Rockstar starting a strong partnership with Nintendo now know they were wrong, because a strong partnership it's based on exclusives. And i also think now starts a huge drop for the true GTA: CTW and that there will never a new franchise for DS. I hope to thing in the wrong way.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

I'm not sure if this was your point, but I think it's good news for DS because late ports never sell well, meaning the two will sell comparatively the same, making Rockstar question to make it exclusive anymore in the future.

Of course DS probably won't get any new GTA exclusive games, but neither will PSP.

I'm trying not to be a fanboy, but i hope so: i hope the false GTA:CTW will sell so poorly to be a lost of money for Rockstar.

Well, me being a PSP owner, I'd have to say I don't want this, or any other GTA game.. It's too many of them.. I didn't even bother to get IV.  I played it, and I know very well san andreas is better, yet, the game still gets a 10?...  A 10 for any other type of game would have been ok, but, when it's GTA, there's something weird going on.  Besides.. there's a new GTA coming out every year it seems like... enough is enough...  They better not milk agent like they are GTA.

That's definitely not my point. I don't care which version sells more, though I hope they both sell well. What I'm saying is that even if the game does better on the PSP, the unique nature of Chinatown wars means it's different than just saying "oh look, we should keep GTA on the PSP" Instead it says "hey there really is a big market for the top down view GTA games, we should make another one, and it makes the most sense to release them on both DS and PSP"

The fact that it can be made for both platforms and get great sales out of both means sequels are more likely. If the PSP version bombs, it's more likely that a sequel won't get made at all for any handheld. And damn it I want another DS GTA!

^^ Or both versions will get played up to their strengths, with everyone coming away happy. I'm going to be very optimistic on this and even call it the best thing to happen to the GTA franchise for gamers. The ensured continuation of the best GTA games on both handhelds.

The PSP doesn't have any strengths in regards to control in comparison to the DS. The DS has a D-Pad, four face buttons and two shoulder buttons, just like the PSP does. The only thing the PSP has in addition is the analog nub, and I don't see how that will make much of a difference. A future sequel has to figure out how to take what is on two different DS screens and conform that to a single PSP screen, plus find a way to make minigames fun both by traditional controls and touch controls.

I just don't see them being successful with both versions. One is going to turn out worse.

I mean what strengths do you feel the PSP has that a future game could get played up to?

Are you speaking generally about the systems or specifically about how China Town Wars would be affected?  I don't even own a PSP, but it seems extreme to say the analog nub doesn't make much of a difference.  Echoes of Time on the DS (it's a great multiplayer game, if you haven't tried it) would be so much better if you could use an analog stick and not an icky DS Lite d-pad!

I'm talking specifically about GTA. It works just fine with the D-Pad. It's very accurate. For those games on DS that require the efficiency of analog control, the DS stylus mimics it rather well. Outside of that, I agree there are games for the DS that would have benefitted from having an analog nub. GTA is not one of them. A PSP port is either going to be greatly changed, or it's going to be full of minuses.
