Forums - Gaming - WTF! how many?

Is everyone else just completely sick of all the different versions of the 360 and ps3 that there are?

ps3. 20gb, 40gb(rumour), 60gb, 80gb

360. core, premium, elite (not to mention the 65nm chip versions and the halo version)

frankly its annoying and I get the feeling that many people are putting off buying a paticular console in fear that a cheaper or better version will come along. Not to mention confusing patentional customers.

I was also wondering why its only been this generation that seems to have started and why is it that nintendo hasnt yet?

what does everybody else think?

That's exactly why I haven't bought a 360 yet.

I have always found annoying different version of consoles too, is like... segregation.

Its competition. Sony discontinued the 20gb and the 60gb.

There is only 1 model out for now. The 80gb with motorstorm.

Updates are natural. The PS2 and XBOX and GC had many hidden updates but the same SKU. The DSLite and PS2 slims are different SKUs done right though.

This gen the companies new their products were priced too high and released lower priced versions in the hopes of generating higher sales. It also allows away of increasing profit(or decreasing profit loss) while also increasing percieved value without a price drop. Eventually the price will have to drop so they intorduce a new SKU that has less percieved value while leaving the higher percieved value SKU there to help recoup profits or lessent he blow.

I blame higher entry prices/lossleading for this.

Their are also so many different PC's and in fact PS3, X360 are PC's.

I doesn't really annoy me that their are so many different versions.

I agree.

I think developers who pick the Wii will definitely have an easier time of it as they have a firm understanding of the hardware they're developing on.  One Wii is the same as another, one 360 may be more/less powerful than another.

In before someone says it's over NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAND!!

This is basically suicide. You're grounding people who want the system and then make things "better." It decreases sales + hype.

80GB is better? I had n extra 80GB HDD laying around so i upgraded my PS3's HDD but 20GB isnt that much "better" since the PS3 supports dlna servers there's practically no reason to care about HDD space since you can stream all you videos, music, and images to the console instead of taking up space.

Thats why I like Nintendo as well. They aren't trying to make a console that's a PC. One Sku, you can confidently buy knowing that 4 years from now it will be the same as what's on the shelf. Maybe some hidden internal differences, but stuff you won't know about unless you really want to.

Where as who knows what 360 or PS3 is going to be on the shelf next christmas, hell who knows what will be on the shelf this christmas. Will it be a better value, or a worse value? Will it be more or less backwards compatible? What will be added to it or taken away? Will it be more reliable? How much will it be? Who knows. Unless it's a wii, then your only question is "will there be a Mario Galaxy Bundle this christmas?"

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.
