Forums - Nintendo - So why do we get Wii Fit plus / Mario Galaxy but no new Mario Kart?

I always thought there was no sequel announced for MK because the sales were still steady and Nintendo didn't want to lose those. However, Wii Fit gets a sequel while it still sells by the bucketload.

A Mario Kart follow up should be easy to develop similarly to Wii Fit so I am surprised one hasn't been announced. I know that usually we would only get one iteration per generation but that's now debunked with the Mario Galaxy sequel.

Does anyone think there will be another MK for the Wii or will we have to wait for  next-gen?

MKWii is selling like hotcakes and a sequel would only cannabalize that. That said, I want Mario Kart Wii to be relevant as I'm not willing to buy a sequel just yet.

Pixel Art can be fun.

I do not think they will make another till a  new console. The one out now is still a hot seller. Then again so is Wii Fit so who knows.

Maybe Wii Fit sales are more about the profit the price with the balance board gives hence no problem with a sequel?

Wii Fit Plus is expanding on what the first one did.  Pretty much, it's adding a routine option and Motion Plus.

Would a new Mario Kart benefit from Motion Plus, and could it be expanded upon that it's pretty much a game in its own right?

Wii Fit Plus will not cannibalize Wii Fit sales, as long as it is sold without Balance Board. It will then probably increase Wii Fit sales...

Probably not. I guess Nintendo are concentrating on titles that can utilise M+ to grow the user base for that peripheral and extend the life of the Wii?

I still think that a MK sequel would be so big it would offset any worries about cannibalisation.

I would rather see new Mario games, Zelda games, and new ips than a new Mario Kart game on the Wii. If we get a new Mario Kart hopefully they have someone else like Namco make the game and not waste time and resources on it.

I'd love a new MK, for I'm absolutely bored with the old tracks by now. I could probably play them with my eyes closed. Too bad the Wii does not allow for DLC on that scale.

Currently playing: NSMB (Wii)

Waiting for: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii), The Last Story (Wii), Golden Sun (DS), Portal 2 (Wii? or OSX), Metroid: Other M (Wii),
... and of course Zelda (Wii)

The main issue with your argument is this: Mario Kart Wii is a multiplayer game, in fact it's even an online multiplayer game with endless replayability while Super Mario Galaxy is a one player game as is Wii Fit, both of which are being improved upon/added to with their respective follow ups.

This is why you won't see a sequel to Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii either, they're both enough for the one generation.

Another thing is the Wii Fit you know now will not be sold any more once Fit Plus hits. Wii Fit Plus w/Balance Board is going to replace Wii Fit and the Wii Fit Plus software will also be made available to those that bought the original. A few people have been confused with that so I thought I'd clarify :P
