KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS IS A RUMORED SURVEY!!!
It's no secret that Activision makes a lot of money by releasing a new Call of Duty every year, but according to a rumored survey dug up by Destructoid, it looks like the publisher is experimenting with other possibilities to monetize the franchise -- specifically, with a potential new online service that could carry a monthly fee.
This survey -- which hasn't actually been confirmed to be legitimate -- describes a new online service that would "enhance the multiplayer experience and provide exclusive access to a group of gameplay enhancements." Such "gameplay enhancements" could include premium access to new expansions, betas, game modes, character skins, enhanced stat tracking, and "support for competitive play" (a very vague and cryptic statement). The survey also mentioned that this service could either come with a monthly subscription fee, or be packed-in with a future Call of Duty title for a flat rate.
While this supposed survey only describes what sounds like an optional support service for future Call of Duty titles, it is particularly interesting when taking into account that Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said last year about the potential for a Call of Duty MMO. Kotick was speaking about something else at the time, but he evidently veered off-topic and wondered aloud, "...when you think about other properties that we own and control, like Call of Duty, and what would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer environment, and how do you monetize that..."
Could this online service -- if it's even real -- be the early stages of figuring out how to monetize a future Call of Duty MMO? We'll have to wait and see how it all develops.
